CENTER. Mo., Oct. 2—J. E. Briggs and daughter Miss Stella returned from a visit at the home of Mrs. J. F. Flowerree of Columbia.
Mr. Briggs celebrated his 94th birthday during the past week.

Adult Education in Ralls
CENTER, Mo., Oct. 2—Mrs. Ira Caldwell of New London, supervisor of adult education in the county was at the city hall Tuesday to interview those interested in the program. Mrs. Caldwell has been making interviews during the past month in Ralls county with the idea of get ting the work started in the county as soon as possible.

J. H.  Robertson of Marshfield was brought to Rolla on Wednesday by Sheriff Johnson of Webster county. He was indicted at the late special term of  the Circuit Court here for robbing. John Paul another Marshfieldian  who is U.S. Commissioner at that place was indicted at the same time but the Sheriff cannot find him. He got $50 out of Capt. P. C. Roberts on some old Bounty matter, by intimidating him with threats that he would have him arrested and brought  before him as U. S. Commissioner if he did not settle the matter by pay, -him $50.  Roberts gave his note and when it came due it was collected by Mr. Thompson an attorney of Marshfield.

-Totsch, the constable of Rolla, township sold some confiscated goods last Saturday.
-Drs. Hendlee and Glenn left for Columbia on Monday morning last to attend the meeting for the organization of the Board of Curators.
-Dr. Jones is erecting a residence on Pine Street, south of Mr. E. J. Morris. We understand that the design is similar to Mr. Morris' only that it will be two story high Instead of n story and half.
- Lumber can be purchased at the river bank at Arlington for $13,00 per thousand. Mr. Graham has considerable on hand. 
- Mr. Kreiling will start a Grocery and Bread store opposite Goettelman's on the first of May. We bespeak for him  the trade of "Old Town" as it is called,
for it will be such a convenience that it will he appreciated.
- Hobart, the enterprising merchant of St. James, has recently received a large consignment of Queensware. Those who want bargains hi that line should call on him.
-We are sorry to learn that Dr. John Blaine of St. James contemplates moving to Illinois in about a month.
- Mr. Win. James is purchasing all the Iron ore that is already rained in this section of country.
-Mr. J. A. Craven of Licking, a leading merchant there, has been in Rolls this week.
-Mr. D. M. Coffman an attorney of Marshfield has been here the past few weeks purchasing claims of soldiers who have had warrants due them.
We understand that he is the agent of a Lumber Company of Minneapolis Minn., who intend to use the warrants for the location of Pine Lands.
- Ed. A. Woelk, formerly of Rolla, but now of Springfield, Mo., has been in Rolla this week on business. 
- Mr. Gibson, brother of Mr. Ed. Clark has been in Rolla the past week.
- The Board of Equalization was in session last week.
-Mr. Bolan, proprietor of the West Plains Mills, and Mr. W. G. Thomas, the County and Circuit Clerk of Howell county, were in Rolla, last week.
-Privy vaults are now the terror in St. James since Mr. Perkins child was drowned A town ordinance demands that vaults shall be made and the people of St. James are earnestly desiring its repeal. They are useless any how. A little dry earth as a deodoriser[sic]  is worth  more than all the vaults in Christendom and in a sanitary point of view is far preferable.
- A little child of Dr. Blain's had its ankle severely injured by a table falling on it one day last week.
- The new residence of Mr. David Malcom, the genial cashier of our National Bank is rapidly approaching completion.
When finished it will be one of the cos?est houses in Rolla. 
-Costello,  the photographer has purchased the Messer property on Fine Street next south of Mr. W. J. C. Taylor. We understand the price paid was $1,200.
- Mr. Louis Auerbach,  our handsome County Treasurer is building a new house on his farm north of Rolla. Whether he will remove with his family in a
short time. He will have an office for the transaction on of business at his residence.
- John Mountz is building a black smith shop opposite Fred Strobach's Wagon Shop. 24x70ft.
-Jones and Hutcheson are painting up their Drug Store.
-B. H. Culbertson is making still another improvement back behind hit house he is enlarging his stable.
-
Jake Clinton, has opened the Oriental Saloon again. It is now in full blast. 
-While some of the school boys were Base Ball up at the school house on Wednesday a little son of  Mr. Porter Allen had one of his front teeth knocked out by
the ball striking him in the month.
- Rev. J. A. Whittaker returned on Wed. from his Eastern visit where he had gone to attend the funeral of his father.
-Wm. Beddoe has put up a dust pipe to carry the snut [sic] and dust away from his mill building.
- Wm. Beddoe has purchased the lot adjoining his residence and pulled down the log house that were upon it.
