NOTE: Mary Ratliff's burial site was once called the Eldad Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The Presbyterian Church no longer owns the site. It sits on a point of land that is encircled by the county road north of Huntsville, Mo. The cemetery is well kept and there are quite a number of tombstones, but we found no stone for Mary Ratliff. We were told that church records list her as being buried in the cemetery but no one could tell us who has those church records.

NOTE:  Richard Bradley's Will was written at Fort Henry. Mo. on 11/23/1864. It was witnessed by William Fort and Thomas Gunn, Sr. It is recorded in the Court House at Huntsville, Mo.
In the Will, Richard Bradley requests his son, John W. Bradley to strictly carry out his wish that no inventory or amount of his property be returned to any Court or officer.
He leaves his farm and other items to his daughters, Susan and Mary as long as they remain single. When they married the farm was to be sold and the profits divided among all of his children.

NOTE: James W. Bradley was a traveling preacher and during a revival he took his young sister-in-law. Anniva Jane Baker, with him on his travels. Anniva Jane Baker was said to have had a beautiful singing voice. At some point the relationship between James W. Bradley and Anniva Jane Baker became intimate. One day after returning home Anniva Jane Baker complained to her mother and father that she was having severe stomach pains. A doctor was called and he announced to Anniva Jane Baker's parents that she was giving birth. James W. Bradley and his wife hurried to the Baker home with baby clothes and other necessities. When Anniva Jane Baker's brothers demanded to know who the father of her baby was, she confessed that it was none other than her brother-in-law the Rev. James W. Bradley.

James W. Bradley was blasted in the Moberly newspaper who stated that a "boiling cauldron awaited his putrid soul". Baker family members went to the library in Moberly and broke off the tape of the first newspaper articles about this scandal. A friend of ours had fortunately saved a copy of the second article and provided it to us. It clearly gave all the grisly details of this sordid affair.

Anniva Jane Baker later married Samuel Noah Sutton and he raised the child of James W. Bradley. We were later contacted by a descendant of that child who was unaware of the details of his birth but knew there was some sort of scandal connected with it..

James W. Bradley was forced to move to Audrain Co., Mo. where he published a Christian newspaper.
