Ray County was formed 1 January, 1821 from Howard County, Missouri.

Ray County was approved by an act of the legislatures of Missouri November 16, 1820. It was formed from Howard County, Missouri and named in honor of the Hon. John Ray, one of the delegates from Howard county. When Ray county was formed it extended to the western border of the state and upwards, containing the counties which are now Clay {formed 1822}, Clinton {formed 1833} , Caldwell {formed 1836}, Daviess {formed 1836}, and Carroll {formed 1837}.
