Crooked River Primitive Baptist Church Richmond Township |
In a personal record book, Rev. John C. Turnage wrote that he and Willie Tomlinson plotted the Old Crooked River Cemetery. The Crooked River Primitive Baptist Church was across the road and a little north of the cemetery. That church was later moved to the southeast corner of Rayville. Crooked River Primitive Church Church Becomes New Home The old Crooked River Primitive Baptist Church will soon become the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Hayes, Jeremy, Jessica and Jason. In an article contributed by Mrs. G.R. (Irma Transue) Tindal and reported in the May 11, 1971 edition of the Richmond Daily News, a report was given on the Rayville Crooked River Primitive Church. Her great -great - great grandfather, Elder William Turnage, preached there at one time. According to history books, he preached as early as 1816 in Bluffton. He helped organized New Hope Primitive Baptist and New Garden Primitive churches. In a record kept by Rev. John C. Turnage, he wrote his mother Esther O'Dell, married Jesse C. Turnage in 1845. Soon after her marriage, she united with the Crooked River Primitive Baptist Church. At that time Mrs. Tindall had no record just when the church was organized. The building was moved to the southeast side of Rayville in 1892. Before this, it was ¾ miles southeast of Rayville across from the Crowley Cemetery. The Hayes have been busy for several weeks renovating the old structure by adding new rooms and a front porch. The Daily News, November 12, 1993 See Christian Union Church of Rayville. I think that once the Crooked River Primitive Baptist moved to Rayville it became part of the Bapist church that worshiped in the same building that the Christian Union and Methodist worshipped in.
