In 1836 the office of collector was abolished. The sheriff was made collector of state and county revenue, and
so continued until 1873.
In 1872 the general assembly of the state passed an act separating the offices of sheriff and collector and
in November of that year Thomas B. Fowler was elected to the collectors office, to begin the following January.
He died September 16, 1875 and his son, Allen M. Fowler was appointed to serve till the next general election,
at which time the people chose him as his own successor.
James A. Davis' term expires January, 1883.
