Orrick Baptist Church Orrick, MO |
| Orrick Baptist Church Sunday, July 15th, 1917, is a day that will long be remembered by the citizens of Orrick and southwest Ray county, and especially by the members of the local Baptist church, for it was on that date their new $12,000 church building was dedicated unto the Lord. A crowd that comfortably filled the main auditorium, the balcony and B. Y. P. U., room, were in attendance when the song service began. After the song service, Pastor W. Holt Smith, made a statement of the approximate cost of the building, the amount of money that had already been subscribed and paid on the building and the amount necessary to raise before the dedicatory services could be concluded. At this time, the service was turned over to Rev. Dr. M. P. Hunt, of Louisville, Ky., who took for his text, Sec. Cor. 8:7, which reads; "See that ye abound in this grace always;" and his address of almost an hour, was a masterful sermon, appropriate for the occasion and made a deep impression on the audience. At the close of the sermon, he called for pledges, and the members of the church and friends responded promptly and liberally; and after almost sufficient pledges had been made, they adjourned to the basement of the church where a sumptuous dinner was served by the Baptist ladies and friends. At 3 o'clock, the audience re-assembled in the auditorium and the remaining pledges necessary to liquidate the indebtedness, were soon made, and the dedicatory service were held. The indebtedness on the building amounted to about $6,500; and $7,000 was pledged during the three services Sunday. The excess will be used in finishing the basement and making some other improvements. The church, at the present, cost of material, would cost about $20,000. It is 40 x 72 feet with full basement, which contains dining room, kitchen and furnace room. The building proper, consists of auditorium and balcony, with a seating capacity of 500 persons. It is equipped with nine sound proof Sunday school rooms, baptistery and ___ box. Sunday school experts say it is the best equipped building in the state, for Sunday school work, in a town the size of Orrick. The contract for the erection of the building was awarded the Central Concrete Construction Co., of Kansas City, August 20th, 1915. Rev. D. M. Trout, now pastor of Baptist church in Clifton Hill, Mo., was pastor of the local church at that time; and the fact that the congregation have a new house of worship, is due in a great measure, to his earnest and untiring work. The weather last Sunday was in harmony with the service of the day, and there was much cause for rejoicing among the church membership over the work that has been so exepediciously carried out during the past two years.
