Thomson Cemetery also known as Sandals Cemetery: Quit claim Deed from Thomas Green & Almeda A. dated 3 July 1951 and filed 27July 1951, Book 265, Page 15 for the amount of $100.00.
the SE 1/4 NE 1/4 30-54-28 which is the present location of the Sandals Cemetery and also, Gantors further sell and convey the land immediately west of the present boundaries of said cemetery to the public road running N & S along the west side of said SE 1/4 NE 1/4 30-54-28.
The tract of land last mentioned runs West 64 feet from the present west cemetery line to the public road and is 206 feet wide N and S. The land above described to be used for burial of human bodies only.
Wm. H. McGaugh and Rebecca to Ezekiel Stone, Director: Warranty Deed dated 11-4-1878, Recorded 11-13-1878, Book 19, Page 425.
Part of SW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 31, Township 53, Range 28, commencing at the SW corner of the present graveyard on said land thence North 5 rods, thence East 15 rods, thence South 5 rods, thence West 15 rods to the place of beginning. Said land being deeded to Ezekiel Stone, Director is for the purpose of having a graveyard on said land. In case of death or resignation The Judge or Judges of the County Couret of Ray County, Missouri, shall appoint a suitable person for director of the same.
When Jacob and Letitia Misemer were buried, the burial plot was called the "Thomspon Cemetery." The contract for delivery of the marble grave-markers directed them to be delivered to the Thompson Cemetery, Knoxville, Missouri.
In earlier days, Knoxville was called Buncombe.
There are many old Thompson and Thomson tombstones found in the graveyard. The oldest one is inscribed, "Joseph Thomson -- died February 7, 1811, age 61 years." His, apparently, is the first interment made in the cemetery. (Note: Missouri was not a state in 1811. On closer examination of the stone it appears to be the year 1841 of the year of Jospeh. L.S.)
This, possibly, is the reason the plot was originally called the "Thompson Cemetery," or perhaps the land was then owned by Mr. Thomson. (Note: Since, as stated above, Missouri was not a state in 1811 and not owned by the U.S. government, there is not a record of who owned the land in 1811.)
In 1870, James M. Sandals, a railroad employee, settled in Caldwell County, Missouri, before moving into Ray County. He was born december 3, 1847, in Stark County, Ohio.
Mr. Sandals worked as a carpenter and owned a saw mill on Crooked River. In June, 1882, he built a new building near the Thompson Cemetery and started a mercantile business called, "The Sandals Store."
James M. Sandals was married in 1873 to a neighborhood girl, Miss Samantha Ellen Teegarden, daughter of Edward and Rhoda (Cummins) Teegarden.
In 1888, when Mr. Sandals was appointed psotmaster of the little village called "Sandals," he built a larger store for his merchandise and the pigeon-hole cabinet in which he kept the mail.
After Mr. Sandals' wife, Samantha Ellen, died March 24, 1896, she was buried in the old burial plot which was south and east of his store, and it became known as the "Sandals Cemetery."
Mr. Sandals died March 31, 1902, and was buried beside his wife.
Since about 1968, the cemetery has, again, been called the Thompson Cemetery, but it will always be known by many as the "Old Sandals Cemetery."
It is located on Highway D, six miles east of Lawson or one mile north of Knoxivlle on Highway 13, thne three miles west on Highway D.
