The origin of the Wakenda Cemetery began with the purchase of land by David Bowman and wife who came to Missouri from Rockingham County, VA in 1857. In 1871 he donated land for a burial site. The same year the church building was established. In later years, by donation, additional land was granted by Jacob F. Bowman and wife; George W. Bowman and wife. The earliest dates revealed on grave-stones here are: Pricilla Spitzer July 21, 1859; Mary Williams, December 14, 1859 and M.A. Williams (Wife of L.J. Williams), December 16, 1859. In earlier years the cemetery was known as "Bowman" and "Dunkard" cemetery. A tornado destroyed the church several years ago, but the cemetery remains, and is well cared for, and contains the burials of many who came to the area from Rockingham County, Virginia. (From "Cemeteries of Grape Grove Township" by Alfred McKemy) This listing was completed in 1994. This cemetery is still in use. (2009) |
