Scott County Missouri Genealogy Trails Kansas City, MO--D.W. GILMORE, 81,
southwest Kansas City, former vice president of the Kansas City Life
Insurance Co., died Aug. 2, 1993, at Research Medical Center. Services
will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Moriah & Freeman Chapel;
burial in Mount Moriah Cemetery.
Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Mr. Gilmore worked for Kansas City Life for 21 years, retiring as senior vice president in 1977. He also was secretary and a member of the board of directors there. He practiced law in Benton, Mo., from 1939 to 1941 and from 1945 to 1952; was prosecuting attorney of Scott County, Mo., in 1947-48; represented the 27th District in southeast Missouri in the state Senate from 1949 to 1951; and was a judge of the 28th Judicial Circuit in southeast Missouri from 1952 to 1955. He was former director and president of the Kansas City Crime Commission, served on the Kansas City police board from 1966 to 1973, served on the Missouri Elections Commission, formerly was a trustee of the Missouri Public Expenditure Survey and headed the State Reorganization Commission. He had also been vice president of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the board of trustees at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the Rockhurst College board of regents. He formerly served on the boards of directors of Commerce Bank of Kansas City, Baltimore Bank & Trust Co. and Jackson County State Bank. Mr. Gilmore was a member of the American and Kansas City bar associations. He was a past director of the Agricultural Hall of Fame. He was president of the Young Democratic Club of Missouri in 1949-50 and the Young Democratic Club of America from 1949 to 1951. He was a member of the Scottish Rite bodies, the Royal Order of Jesters and the Missouri Academy of Squires. He was a 1938 graduate of the Washburn University law school. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and MU. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Naval Reserves as a commander. He was a member of the American Legion and the Navy League of the United States. He was born in East Prairie, Mo., and lived in Benton before moving to this area in 1954. Survivors include two sons, Theodore E. Gilmore, Stanley in Johnson County, and Webb R. Gilmore, Kansas City; a brother, G. Weber Gilmore, Benton, Ky.; a sister, Ernestine Wright, Cape Coral, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grand-children. --Kansas City Star, The (MO) - August 3, 1993 Decatur, IL--GIPSON, 39, of Decatur died Thursday (Feb. 22, 2001) in St. Mary's Hospital. Services will be noon Tuesday in Walker Funeral Service and Chapel with visitation one hour before services. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. Gipson was born Jan. 23, 1962, in Scott County, Mo., the son of L.C. Chatman and Alberta Gipson. He professed a hope in Christ at an early age. He leaves not to mourn but to cherish fond memories his mother of Decatur; daughter, Sofia Flagg of Decatur; brothers, Robert (Gernice) Gipson of Scott County, Mo.; Joe Gipson and Tommy Gipson, both of Decatur; L.C. Chatman Jr. of St. Louis, Mo.; sisters, Wanda (Eugene) Harris of Scott County; Julie (Quinton) Tyrell of Chicago; Alma Matthews and Atter Clark, both of Decatur; Ruby Chatman of St. Louis; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Goddard was born Jan. 3, 1918, in Chaffee, Mo., and was a former resident of California. He had been a resident of the Gulf Coast for 25 years and was a Methodist. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Packer of Vancleave; a sister, Vera Speaks of Paso Robles, Calif.; a brother, Charles Goddard of Chaffee; two stepsons, Sam T. Packer of Moss Point and Christopher Packer of Pascagoula; two stepdaughters, Yvonne Hill and Barbara Harper, both of Moss Point; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. today in Chaffee, Mo. Lockett-Williams' Mortuary in Gulfport is in charge of local arrangements. She was born June 6, 1938 at Oran, MO, daughter of Wallace and Juanita Hunt Hanshew. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chaffee. Survivors include a son, Johnny Matzke of Cleveland. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son and a daughter. There will be no services. Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee is in charge of arrangements. Memphis, TN--JANE DAE KING GRAVATT, 72, of Memphis, formerly of Chaffee, Mo., homemaker, died of heart failure Wednesday at Saint Francis Hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Home in Chaffee with burial in Forest Hills Memorial Garden there. She leaves two sons, David Gravatt of Como, Miss., and Gary Gravatt of Memphis, four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. --Commercial Appeal, The (Memphis, TN) - October 15, 1999 GALVA, IL -- CHARLES L. GRAY, 82, of 420 SE Fourth St. died at 1:25 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 1992, at Oakwood Health Care Center in Kewanee, IL. Born Aug. 2, 1910, in Scott County, Mo., to Coleman and Ethel Wilburn Gray, he married Lucile Harpole on May 20, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa. She died July 14, 1972. He later married Evelyn F. Nelson on June 3, 1973, in Galva. She died March 5, 1991. He also was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Surviving are one son, Ben Gray of North Edwards, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (June) Miles of St. Peters, Mo.; three grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Tracy Nell of Galva and Lorene Wheeler of Milan, IL. He farmed in his early years and owned and operated Gray's Shoe Repair in Galva. He also worked at John H. Best Co. and Lily-Tulip Corp., both in Galva. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Galva. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rux-Schuster Funeral Home in Galva, where visitation will be one hour before services. The Rev. Mrs. Green was an executive secretary and office manager. Born in Vanduser, Mo., she moved to Central Florida in 1971. A member of North Georgetown Brethren Church, she also was Past Royal Matron Order of the Amaranth. A native of Benton, Mo., he had lived in the Tampa Bay area since 1945, coming from Atlanta. He was a retired colonel in the U.S. Army and a retired postal inspector. He was a member of Bayshore Baptist Church, Hillsborough Lodge 25 A.F. & A.M., the Egypt Shrine Temple, the Tampa Consistory of the Scottish Rite, the Retired Officers Association, the National Association of Retired Postal Inspectors, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and American Legion Post 5. He is survived by his wife, Dalma M.; one son, Stephen W. of Tampa; two daughters, Katherine Willis of Land O' Lakes and Valli Smith of Tampa; one sister, Reba Holloway of San Clemente, Calif. and two grandchildren.
