HISTORY OF SCOTT COUNTY, MISSOURI

Source: Excerpts from Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri, BNL Library Service, P. O. Box 1506, Harry S Truman Station, Independence, Missouri 64055, c1888.

An Act of Legislature approved on December 28, 1821 dividing New Madrid County into what is now Scott County. By the same act Enoch Evans, Abraham Hunter, Thomas Roberts, Joseph Smith and Newman Beckwith were appointed to locate the seat of justice for Scott County. The county court was organized at the house of Thomas Houts in February or March 1822. Judges were Andrew Ramsey, Richard Mathew and Thomas Houts. The first courthouse was a small log building erected on the public square at Benton soon after the town was laid out. About 1844 the log courthouse was torn down and a brick building erected. This was replaced by a frame building. By an act of the Legislature, passed January 26, 1864, the county seat was removed to Commerce. In 1878, by a vote of the people, the seat of justice was returned to Benton, and in 1883 the present courthouse was built at a cost of $11,000.

Hello, my name is Anna.  I will be your temporary host until such time as we get a permanent host for this county.

Our goal is to help you track your ancestors through time by transcribing genealogical and historical data and placing it online for the free use of all researchers. We're looking for people who share our dedication to putting data online and are interested in helping this project be as successful as we can make it. If you are interested in joining our group by hosting either this county website or one of the available county websites, view our Volunteer Information page and Email Kim.

A desire to transcribe data and the ability to make a basic webpage is required.

Please send your data to me at this email.

We regret that we are unable to do personal research for you.
