CECIL NEWELL, 78, of 1421 Arthur St. died at 4:44 p.m.
Saturday, May 8, 1999, at his residence.
Born Sept. 1, 1920, in Vanduser, Mo., to Noah Franklin and Ida Mae Upchurch Newell, he married Ida Arzella Phillips on Feb. 27, 1947, in Morley, Mo. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, B. Dewayne of Falls Church, Va., Gary of Harrisonburg, Va., and James of Kentwood, La.; two sisters, Mrs. Sam (Olean) Branson of Jackson, Miss., and Ollie Bowen of Marble Hill, Mo.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. One grandson, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. A World War II Army veteran, he was a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5368 in Morley. He was a welder at Caterpillar Inc. in East Peoria for 32 years, retiring Sept. 1, 1982. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Pekin, where he served as a church usher and was a member of the Survivors Sunday school class. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at his church. The Rev. Tim Najpaver will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, and 30 minutes before services at the church.
