Lewis and
Clark in St. Charles
In 1804, William Clark and the Corps of Discovery stopped in St. Charles, still
a predominately French community.
Meriwether Lewis was attending business in St. Louis, and the Corps waited for
him to join them.
As they waited, they rearranged the goods in their boats, bought supplies and
enjoyed the hospitality of St. Charles.
Lewis arrived in St. Charles on May 20, and the expedition resumed the following
day.
Lewis and Clark departed the riverbank in
St. Charles. The banks of the Missouri River were lined with cheering citizens
wishing them good luck.
With a simple handshake from St. Charles dignitaries they headed north up the
Missouri River.
With each step and billow of sail, they began what many historians consider the
greatest military expedition in U.S. history.
