1682
1763 - Treaty of Paris - The Spanish obtained the Louisiana Territory from
France. The Spanish called the area San Carlos.
1769 - Louis Blanchette built a log cabin in San Carlos. Blanchette favored
calling the area "Les Petites Cotes" meaning Little Hills.
1791
- Blanchette was named Commandant of the
District of San Carlos.
1792 - The first recorded marriage in the area. John Baptiste Provost married
Angelique Savanges on September 25th.
1797 - The area had a population of 80 families.
1799 - Daniel Boone settled in the area.
1803 - The Louisiana Purchase was signed. When the formal transfer of the
Upper Louisiana Territory from France to the U.S. took place, San Carlos
became ST. CHARLES.
1804 - Louis and Clark set sail from St. Charles. The area had a population
of 450 persons.
1812 - Missouri was organized as a Territory. The Old District of St. Charles
was reorganized and became one of the 5 original
counties.
1815 - Treaty of Peace was made at
Portage Des Sioux between the Confederate Indian Tribes and the U.S.
1818 - The Academy of Sacred Heart was
established in St. Charles by Philippine Duchesne.
1819 - St Charles had a population of 1,110 persons. 981 Whites, 124
Slaves, and 5 Free Negroes.
1820 - Daniel Boone died in St. Charles.
1830 - St. Charles City was incorporated. St. Charles had a major Cholera
epidemic.
1846 - The first public school was
organized.
1876 - A tornado hit St. Charles on
February 27th.
4 were killed and 150 buildings were destroyed including the
County Courthouse, the County Jail, and the Concert
Hall.
1879 - The Wabash railroad bridge gave
way and 18 railcars fell into the river below. 5 men were
killed.
1881 - The Wabash railroad bridge failed again.
This time 31 railroad cars fell into the river carrying cattle and freight. The
engineer lost his life.
1884 - The Montana, a 252 foot Steamboat lost power and crashed into the
Wabash railroad bridge. The boat was destroyed.
1888 - Pontoon bridge was built across the Missouri
River
to Join St. Charles and St
Louis, but the bridge was destroyed 5 months later by ice on the river.
1916 - Another tornado hit St. Charles.
It destroyed St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.
