St. Louis is one of the original districts.

Organized Oct. 1, 1812 and became the first government seat for the Missouri Territory; until 1820.

On Dec. 9, 1822 it was incorporated as a city.

In 1876 the city of St. Louis separated from the county, making two different governments. The city of St. Louis is an independent city, but the information here will cover both the city and county of St. Louis.

Modern-day St. Louis county is the most populous county in Missouri.
