Husband and Cuts Her Own Throat Philadelphia Inquirer (PA) 31 Dec. 1881 |

Little Rock, ARK, Dec. 30 -- On last Friday Eson Bolin was murdered at Rogers, near Bentonville, Arkansas, by his wife. The murdered man - a carpenter - lately moved into this section from Stone county, Missouri, and found works at Rogers. He was living in a small house, and an old man named Martin was boarding with Bolin, and martin ate supper as usual and went to bed early. Some time before midnight Martin was aroused by the report of a pistol in the house, and saw Bolin's wife advancing toward his bed. She exclaimed that some one had shot him - meaning her husband. She did not seem affected, more than to shed a few tears. Mrs. Bolin was arrested and confessed the crime, and justified herself by saying Bolin had killed two men, was a horse thief, had lived by theft in every place where they had been, had threatened her life at various times, and on two occasions had drawn a knife on her and that her life was most miserable with him. Her statements where made in a cool and unmoved manner, while the dead body of the man was so near that she might have touched it. Three of their children were sent to the poorhouse, and she was permitted to take the youngest son, three months old, to jail with her. On Monday Mrs. Bolin asked the jailor to let her have his knife, that she wished to cut up a dress to make the baby some clothing. He handed it to her and stepped out for a little while, and then opened the door and asked if she was through with the knife. she replied not quite. Presently he again opened the door, when a ghastly sight met his gaze. she had cut her throat, severing the jugular vein and windpipe, as was lying on the floor with the blood gushing forth in torrents. He removed the infant and summoned physicians, but nothing could be done, and she died in a few moments. Transcribed by: Carrie Tuck {cvt1977@yahoo.com} |
