The talented young gentleman who represents Wright county, is one of the most promising young men of the Twenty-Seventh General Assembly, and must in time stand high amongst the leading men of Missouri. His close attention to business, his keen perception and ready action, his gentle-manly bearing and courtesy, have won for him the confidence and respect of all who enjoy his acquaintance.

This gentleman was born July 29th, 1847, at Fair Grove, Davidson county, North Carolina, received a classical education at Davidson County Academy, afterward entered the Military Academy in North Carolina, where he remained until April, 1865. Read law at Hillsborough, North Carolina, emigrated to Missouri in the summer of 1866, located at Hartsville, in Wright county and commenced the practice of his profession, where he has remained since in the diligent prosecution of his business, and is doing a lucrative and rapidly increasing practice. In 1872, at the primary election for Representative in his county, he beat all opposition six to one, making the race on the Democratic ticket, overcoming a Republican majority of fourteen. He is Chairman of the Committee on Enrolled bills, also on Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence, and Scientific and Benevolent Institutions. He has earnestly and persistently opposed the taxing of costs in criminal courts against counties instead of the State, and has taken a special interest in bills of a criminal law nature. He has fought manfully and untiringly for every measure of any importance pertaining in any manner whatever to South or Southwest Missouri, and no man in the present Legislature can go home and look his constituents in the face with more complacence and self-satisfaction than the honored subject of this notice.
