Crow History

The First Crow Agency:

The first Crow Agency was near the mouth of Mission Creek (10+ miles
east of Livingston), and Major Pease was a BIA agent there. The second
Crow Agency was at Absaraokee (Apsa'alooke) , and was established
in June of 1875. The third and current Crow Agency was moved from
Absarokee to Crow Agency in 1884 and is 13-miles south of Hardin.

Fort Pease was constructed in 1875 near the mouth of the Big Horn
River. It is no where close to Mission Creek or Absarokee. It is about
60-miles northeast of the current Crow Agency.

The River Crow never signed an independent treaty with the United States;
however, they were assigned a reservation in far northeastern Montana
(about where the Fort Peck Reservation is located). The Mission Creek
Crow Agency was in Mountain Crow country and 99% of the Crow around
that area were from the Mountain Crow band. The same was true for the
Absarokee Crow Agency.

During the 1870's the River Crow band and the Kicked-In-The- Belly
band (from Wyoming) moved to Mountain Crow country. In
the 1870's the three bands of Crow had the approximate percentages:

Mountain (Main) Band = 60%

River Band = 30%

K-I-T-B = 10%*

* The K-I-T-B often joined with the Mountain Crow band for months at a time, before returning to Wyoming (before the 1870's).
