Chouteau County was established in 1865 and
in 1882, it was named after Pierre Chouteau Jr.
Pierre Chouteau Jr. was a well known fur trader that established
a trading post later known as
Fort Benton. The county seat is Fort Benton. The county is a
total of 3, 997 square miles. It is mostly
prairie land. It is also home to the Chippewa-Cree Tribe.
