, Zales Nelson, a Senator from Montana; born in Weldon, Decatur County, Iowa, April 1, 1898; moved to Gallatin County, Mont., in 1907; attended the public schools of Gallatin County, Montana State College at Bozeman, and the University of Chicago Law School; rancher with interests in grain and livestock 1921-1946; member, State house of representatives 1933-1937; member, State senate 1937-1946; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1946, and served from January 3, 1947, to January 3, 1953; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1952; resumed ranching activities; died at Bozeman, Mont., March 3, 1961; interment in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

County Administrator Biography
County Administrator, Earl Mathers began working for Gallatin County on September 5, 2006. Earl came to Gallatin County after working for 11 years in the Washington, DC area and abroad. He is a graduate of the University of Montana and completed his Master of Public Administration degree at the University of Wyoming.
Earl worked in local government and regional development programs in Wyoming for 10 years and has additional professional experience in the community college, continuing education and developmental disabilities fields. He also served as the Chief of Party on two USAID funded, long-term international development projects that were designed to build the capacity of local governments in Lithuania and Romania. Earl and his wife Kallie have four grown children and a granddaughter.
The Gallatin Historical Society, founded in 1977, moved into two rooms in the county jail building in 1979. Built in 1911, the jail was already considered an historic structure. When prisoners were moved to new quarters in January 1982, the county commissioners granted the Society use of the entire building for the Pioneer Museum.
