Henry Martin Rice
Since you are a photo bug, I'm going to ask if you know any history of early photographers in Montana? My great-grandfather, Henry Martin Rice was a photographer, who arrived in Montana with his family, sometime before 1887. We think they were in Missoula (their son, Earl was born there 1887), then they went to Deer Lodge, where Henry died December 1891. He formed a partnership with A. B. Hower, in Deer Lodge for a couple of years, but I don't think it lasted very long. After Henry's death, Helen moved the family to Logan, where she was a cook (and maybe ran a boarding house) for the railroad workers.
It would be interesting to learn more about Henry's work. We've never found any of his pictures. You'd think he would have taken pictures of his kids, but to our knowledge, there are none. Donna
