Wibaux County was created by the Montana Legislature in 1914 from parts of Dawson, Fallon, and Richland Counties.
The name comes from Pierre Wibaux, a late 19th century cattle baron and friend of Theodore Roosevelt whose ranch
was just over the border in Dakota Territory.
According to legend, Pierre Wibaux's cowboys surrounded the town of Mingusville, and wouldn't let anyone enter
or leave town unless they signed a petition changing the name of the town to Wibaux. Upon his death, his ashes
were spread over a hill west of Wibaux. Today, a statue of Pierre Wibaux stands on that hill. St Peter's Catholic
Church, in Wibaux is named after him.
The town of Wibaux originally had names such as Keith, Beaver, and Mingusville (named for Minnie and Gus Grisy,
who ran the Post Office in the late 19th century). In 1895, the town was renamed for prominent local cattle rancher,
Pierre Wibaux, who had immigrated to the area from France in 1883.
After Wibaux's arrival, the town became a major cattle shipping center for the Northern Pacific Railroad, notably
receiving some of the cattle from Theodore Roosevelt's Maltese Cross and Elkhorn ranches near Medora, North Dakota.
The great cattle drives of the 1880s often passed by Wibaux on their way from Texas to the northern ranges.

We're looking to add the transcribed data from the vital records, biographies from the county histories as well
as the county history information itself, transcriptions of obituaries, burial data from cemetery trompings and/or
readings, the data from military pensions and other service records; enumerations from census years, any newspaper
gleanings for the family members including birth announcements, marriage announcements, death notices/obits and
anything in between - in short, the data you used to build your family tree (rather than the tree itself since
we don't have the space or manpower to accept gedcoms and trees)
