PARENTS OF SOLDIERS OF AREA GIVEN AWARDS VICTIMS OF VIETNAM WAR
Posthumous awards were presented last week to the parents of two area men who were killed while serving in the Republic of Vietnam. The presentations of medals and awards honored the service and memory of SP/4 Jeff Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. William D. Miller of Todd. The ceremonies were conducted by LTC John G. Collins, professor of military science at Appalachian State University.
SP4 Miller received the Bronze Star Metal with "V" device for heroism in general combat against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam Jan. 25, 1970. Learning that one of his comrades was seriously wounded, Specialist Miller voluntarily crawled through a barrage of fire to help him. He carried the wounded man to a landing zone as the medical evacuation helicoptor tried in vain to land through the intense enemy fire. His gallant efforts and devotions to his comrade were an inspiration to the rest of the platoon members who bravely fought and resisted the enemy attack.
He served with 1st Platoon, Delta Company, 3rd Battalion, 506th Infantry, "Currahees", 101st Airborne Division, 'Screaming Eagles', USARV.
He was awarded Bronze Star Metal with "V" device for Heroism, The Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service, The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The Air Medal with Multiple Oak Leaf Clusters, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
Burial: Pleasant Valley Methodist Church Cemetery, Watauga County, North Carolina.
