Sp5 Harold Lee Guthrie, Korean War Veteran, Vietnam War Veteran, Native of Graham, NC. Born April 3, 1929, Catawba County, North Carolina.
Specialist Five Harold Lee Guthrie was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SP5 Guthrie served our country until July 15th, 1962 in Dak Rhode, South Vietnam. He was 33 years old and was not married. It was reported that Harold died when his helicopter crashed. His body was recovered. SP5 Guthrie is on panel 01E, line 011 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 14 years.
The 8th Transportation Company was a Light Assault Helicopter Company who was the 1st Helicopter Company to use Helicopters as assault vehicles in Vietnam.
Guthrie, Harold L, Specialist 5, US Army, died July 15, 1962, from enemy fire near Dak Rhode, Vietnam, during an aerial reconnaissance mission as crew chief of an H-21C helicopter. Specialist 5 Guthrie, age 33, was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1963. The medal was received by his seven-year-old son, Garland E. Guthrie, at a ceremony in the Zion Christian Church. Specialist 5 Guthrie is survived by his son, his mother, Mrs. Nettie T. Guthrie, and two sisters Mrs. Willie A. Smith and Mrs. Robert Satterfield.

He was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Korean Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, The Good Conduct Medal and The Air Medal with Multiple Oak Leaf Clusters.
Burial: Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, Providence, North Carolina.
