SHARPE, William, a Delegate from North Carolina; born near Rock Church, Cecil County, Md., December 13, 1742; pursued classical studies; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Mecklenburg County, N.C. in 1763; also engaged in surveying; moved to Rowan (now Iredell) County; member of the Provincial Congress in 1775; aide to General Rutherford in the Indian campaign in 1776 and was one of four commissioners appointed by Governor Caswell to form a treaty with the Indians in 1777; delegate to the convention in Halifax in 1776 and helped to frame the first constitution of the state; Member of the Continental Congress 1779-1781; member of the state house of representatives in 1781 and 1782; died near Statesville, Iredell County, N.C., on July 1, 1818; interment in Snow Creek Methodist Church Cemetery.
