City and Local
Mr. Summers, the enterprising proprietor of the Statesville Sash and Blind Factory, met with a painful accident at the Factory last Thursday. While working about the saw, his right hand became entangles in some way and was almost severed from his arm by a cut from the saw. The wound is quite painful and a very serious one to an honest and industrious mechanic.

The Iredell Blues
This gallant company of which there are comparatively few survivors, was organized about 1810, with Gen. John A. Young, now of Charlotte, as its first Captain. The gentlemanly conduct and soldiery bearing of its members ever won for it high esteem, and entitled it to that merit which in after years it was their glory to achieve. At the breaking out of hostilities, the Blues promptly responded to their country's call, and marched to the front, under the leadership of that brave Captain, A. K. Simonton, who fell nobly fighting at the head of his men. Since the war this company has not been perpetuated, but as the Lafayette Company of Fayetteville the oldest volunteer Company in the United States, the Rowan Rifle Guards and others have been reorganized, we would suggest a similar step on the part of the Blues. At some future day, we hope for the interest of a large portions of our readers, to be able to give a sketch of this Company from its organization.
Clean Up The Back Streets and Alleys
The summer is now fully upon us and nothing should be permitted to accumulate in the street that could possibly engender the health of our city. Every street and alley should be thoroughly cleaned at least twice a week of every particle of offensive matter that accumulated theron. If there is not sufficient force on the streets to do this, let more be employed. No amount of money is too much to spend to avert the possibility of sickness. We know that Statesville is as healthy a city as there is this side of Pikes Peak, (in Colorado), but cleanliness in the back streets and alleys is very important and desirable.
