WANTS TO BE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE WORKHOUSE - We understand that E.D. Hewlett, recently a constable of this city, a brother of one of the County Commissioners, and at one time a Registrar for one of the precincts of the then Military Post of Wilmington, has applied for the office of Superintendent of our County Workhouse. If his brother has any influence with the Board of which he is so honorable (?) a member, he will no doubt attain the end of his ambition. It may be interesting to some of our readers to know that this man E.D. Hewlett has not paid or listed any taxes whatever in the past two years. And yet he desires to be supported by the money paid for taxes by others.

PAINFUL ACCIDENT - Yesterday morning while some of the frieght cars of the A. & N.C. Railroad were passing through this city, a negro boy named Providence_______, in climbing on one of them, fell, and the car wheel passing over his right arm, crushing it badly. Doctors I.W. and J.B. Hughes were called in to the sufferer, and it was found by them that amputation was necessary, which operation they performed, and at the last accounts we had of him he was doing as well as could be expected.
