ASHE,Samuel; was born in North Carolina in 1725, and brother of General John B. Ashe, of the old Congress; was a lawyer of ability, a citizen of exalted patriotism, and a soldier in emergencies; was a leading member of the North Carolina congress; Chief Justice of the State from 1777 to 1796; Governor of North Carolina from 1795 to 1798. Died at Rocky Point, North Carolina, February 3, 1813
