J. Herbert Winstead
The funeral for James Herbert Winstead, 83, of 1652 Semora Rd., who died Saturday, June 7, 2008 at his home, was conducted ina New Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Burial was in the Winstead Family Cemetery.
Born on Sept. 9, 1925 in Person County, Mr. Winstead was the son of the late Richard C. and Betsy Lester Winstead.
He grew up on the Winstead family farm on Semora Road. He received his early education in Person County schools and was graduated from Person County Training School in 1943. An honor student, he attended Morgan State College in Baltimore, Md.
He served in the United States Air Force and received an honorable discharge in 1952.
He was a blood bank technologist for 42 years. He retired in 1995 from the blood bank at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
He lived in East Orange, N.J. until 1997, when he returned home.
He was a member of New Mount Zion Baptist Church in Roxboro.
Surviving are four sisters, Arlene W. Williams and Gladys W. Thorp, both of East Orange, N.J.; Emily W. Eily of Roxboro and Lowillis W. Johnson of Linden, N.J.; and a brother, Donald Winstead of Roselle, N.J.
