Rutherford County, North Carolina

Formed from the western part of the former Tryon County in 1779.
Named for  Griffith Rutherford, a Revolutionary War general

Parts of Rutherford County were split off over the years to form Buncombe, Cleveland, McDowell and Polk Counties.

The county seat is Rutherfordton
