HENDERSON -- Lewis VanWart, 65, of Memphis, formerly of Henderson, retired from the Navy and Memphis Defense Distribution Depot, died Saturday at Methodist Hospital in Memphis after an apparent heart attack. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Leon Johnson Funeral Home with burial in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in McNairy County. Mr. VanWart, the husband of Beulah VanWart, also leaves a daughter, Patricia Bockus of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; two sons, Larry Vance of Munford and Lewis VanWart Jr. of Bartlett; three sisters, Charissa Potter of Stowe, Mass., and Lillian Bedard and Alice VanWart, both of Ware, Mass., and four grandchildren.

FLORENCE M. STAINBACK, 77, 107 E. Benita Ave., Kissimmee, died Tuesday, Nov. 22. Mrs. Stainback was an accountant. Born in Vance County, N.C., she moved to Central Florida in 1949. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Kissimmee. Survivors: son, Lee Johnson, Jacksonville; daughter, Polly, Kissimmee; sister, Tina Coggins, Henderson, N.C.; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. Conrad and Thompson Funeral Home, Kissimmee.

Jessie D. Hunter of the 800 block of Scott St., a retired X-ray technician, died March 30, 1994, in her home.
Mrs. Hunter was born in Vance County, N.C., and was retired from Orthopedic Surgery Limited after 25 years. She was a member of Zion Bethel United Church of Christ in Portsmouth, former member of (NU)4 Usher Board, past president of the New Member Committee, past president of the January Birthday Club, member of the Adult Sunday School and member of Continental Social and Savings Club.
Survivors include her husband, John F. Hunter; four daughters, E. Marie Bell of Virginia Beach, Veronica H. Frazier, Jacalyn D. Hunter and Cheryl L. Ferguson, all of Portsmouth; four sisters, Mary L. Terry, Virginia Boyd, Rosa L. Terry, all of Manson, N.C., and Carrie Bullock of Henderson, N.C.; three brothers, Kemp B. Hargrove of Manson, N.C., Howard H. Hargrove of Neptune, N.J., and Robert L. Hargrove of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, Felicia M. Anderson, Christopher J. Bell, Valente J. Frazier, Kenric J. Frazier and Shayla M. Ferguson; special friends, Betty Marsh, Arlene Adams, Thelma Ard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in Zion Bethel United Church of Christ, Portsmouth, by the Rev. D.A. Peace. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday in Corprew Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Monday.

Lula Elizabeth Skenes, 80, of the 900 block of Stewart St., a retired PBX operator, died July 9, 1994, in Chesapeake General Hospital.
Mrs. Skenes was born in Vance County, N.C. She had retired from the Golden Triangle Hotel. She was the widow of Willie Connell Skenes and was a member of Raleigh Heights Baptist Church. She was a member of Ruth Bible Class and a member of the Helpful Club of the Church. She was also a member of the South Norfolk Civic League. She was predeceased by a son, Charles S. Skenes.
Survivors include two daughters, Beatrice Ann Parrish of Gasburg, Va., and Rebecca S. Newhart of Chesapeake; two sons, Willie C. Skenes Jr. and James ''Skeno'' Skenes, both of Chesapeake; a sister, Willie G. Gupton of Henderson, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Penny Wilson and the Rev. Henry Napier. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m.
