HENDERSON -- James Wiggins Jenkins, Jr.,
79, of Henderson, died Wednesday, January 28, at his home at 941
Meadow Lane.
Mr. Jenkins was a native of Vance County
and the son of James Wiggins and Christine Thomas Jenkins. He
was a graduate of Henderson High School's class of 1935 and of
The Citadel in 1939. While at The Citadel he achieved numerous
honors. He was named Cadet Lieutenant Colonel, editor of the
Shako (a literary magazine at the school) and he was also a
member of both the Round Table and the golf team.
He was a retired Major in the United States Air Force,
serving as an instructor. Mr. Jenkins has served as Chairman of
the Henderson Salvation Army Advisory Board. He also served as
President of the Vance County
United Fund, the Henderson Rotary Club and the Henderson Country
Club. As a life-long active member of the First United Methodist
Church, he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and
founded the Fellowship Sunday School Class for which he was a
teacher for many years.
Jack was former Chairman of Admissions at the Methodist
Retirement Home in Durham, director of the North Carolina Oil
Jobbers Association, director of the Vance-Granville
Community College Endowment Fund from 1977-1984, and he served
as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Jubilee Health Center.
He was Vance County's
Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1980 and he was recognized as
Vance County's
Outstanding Volunteer for his participation in the
Meals-on-Wheels program.
Surviving are his wife, Anne Upchurch Jenkins; a daughter,
Maria Jenkins Mills; a son, James Thomas Jenkins; a sister,
Elizabeth Jenkins Young; and six grandchildren. Mr. Jenkins was
predeceased by a son, Robert Upchurch Jenkins.
The family will receive friends at home at 941 Meadow Lane,
Henderson. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, at
First United Methodist Church by Dr. James Donald Phillips.
Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Randolph Dennis Mills, III, James Jenkins
Mills, James Thomas Jenkins, Jr., Barrett Massey Jenkins, Jason
Upchurch Jenkins, A.G. Borden, Walter B. Burwell, R.G. Kittrell,
Jr., M.F. Legg, Jr., S. Malone Parham, Bennett H. Perry, Jr.,
John A. Rainey, and Thomas S. Royster. Honorary pallbearers will
be members of the Fellowship Class of the First United Methodist
Church.
