HENDERSON -- Alexander Baskerville,
84, of Britthaven, died Sunday, February 13, 2000. He was a Vance
Co., native and the son of the late Silas and Lucy Bullock
Baskerville.
He attended public schools in Vance
County and was a graduate of Central
Evening High School in Boston, Ma.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and had a long career as an
orderly. He retired from the VA Hospital in Durham where he
received superior service awards. He also was recipient of
awards from the Vance County
Leadership Caucus for voter registration, the Volunteer Award
from the Vance County
Office of Aging and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Gov.
James B. Hunt.
He was a member of Ashley Grove Baptist Church where the
funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev.
Wilson Battle, pastor will officiate. Interment will be held in
the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at Williams
Funeral Home until taken to the church one hour prior to the
service.
There are no immediate survivors, except nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are by Williams Funeral Home of Henderson.

HENDERSON -- William Junius
Matthews, of 218 Crestwood Rd., died Friday, October
13, 2000, at his home.
A native of Vance County,
he was the son of the late John Junius and Martha Virginia
Riggan Matthews. He was the widower of Joyce Longmire Matthews.
Mr. Matthews was manager of the Vance
County Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance
Agency. He was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held today at 4:30 p.m. at Island
Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Johnson Gupton.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna M. Saad and husband, Amgad,
of Raleigh; a son, William A. 'Bill' Matthews and wife, Mariella,
of Middleburg; four sisters, Virginia M. Fisher, Margaret M.
Morgan, and Rose M. Wester, all of Henderson, and Edna M.
Talley, of Fuquay-Varina; and three grandchildren, William A.
'Will' Matthews Jr., Gabriella 'Gabby' Matthews, and Sunnie
Joyce Saad.
The family received friends Saturday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they are at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Macy Foster, Tom Kirby,
Randolph Reese, Phil Brackins, Lawrence 'Cotton' Clayton, Jimmy
Twisdale, Bob Catherwood, and Terry Partin. Honorary pallbearers
will be Wilson Hoyle, D.T. Ayscue, Charles Barnett, John Falkner,
and employees of Vance County
Farm Bureau.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Island Creek
Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Rd., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral
arrangements.
