HENDERSON - Mary Louise Van Dyke Ayscue, 73, of 773 Opie Frazier Road, Henderson, in the Epsom Community, died Sunday, October 7, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital.
Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late David Louis and Ora Strum Van Dyke. Mrs. Ayscue was a homemaker.
She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Bertha Stainback and Magnolia Dickie Sunday School Class. She was very active in the Senior Adult Ministry and was a former Sunday School Teacher. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 2:00 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church, conducted by Pastor Jim Curtis and the Rev. John R. Yevak. Burial, will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Richard Glenn Ayscue, Sr.; a daughter, Rev. Tammy L. Ayscue, of Epsom; a son, Richard G. Ayscue, Jr., of Tarboro; two sisters, Sadie V. Fox, of Mebane and Bettie V. Sogar, of Cleveland, Ohio; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

HENDERSON - Lottie Smith Weldon, 94, of 8678 NC 39 Hwy. S. Henderson, NC., in the Epsom Community, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 in Maria Parham Hospital.  A native of Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late James Blair and Dora Coley Smith. She was the widow of James Dewey Weldon.  Mrs. Weldon was a homemaker.
She was a member of Liberty Vance United Church of Christ and the Henderson Civitan Club.  Funeral service will be held Friday, at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. John R. Yevak. Burial will follow in Liberty Vance United Church of Christ Cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Ann W. Mayo of Mount Olive, and Jean W. Ayscue of Henderson; a sister, Ethel S. Harutun of Palm Springs, California; a brother, Edward B. Smith of Waco, Texas; nine grandchildren, Steve Southerland of Bracey, Va., Theresa S. Daves of Ellenwood, Ga., James H. Mayo Jr. of Mount Olive, NC, Ann M. Gregory of Goldsboro, NC., Nancy M. West of Dudley, NC, Joyce M. Beavers of Seven Springs, NC, Garland R. Ayscue Jr. of Henderson, Jean A. Sturgill of Mebane, NC., and James R. Ayscue of Fuquay-Varina, NC; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren and four step-great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a grandson, William D. Mayo.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m.  At Flowers Funeral Home. All other times they will be at the home of Jean Ayscue, 42 Wintergreen Road, Henderson.  Members of the Henderson Civitan Club will serve as active pallbearers.

HENDERSON - Alma Howell West, 89, of 12378 Hwy. 39 North, died Sunday, July 22, 2001.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late William and Lizzie Reavis Howell. She was the widow of William Henry West Sr.
Mrs. West was retired from the State of North Carolina, having worked at Murdoch Center. She was a member of NutBush Presbyterian Church in Townsville.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the NutBush Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. John Edgerton III and the Rev. J. Lemar Wheeler. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three sons, William H. West Jr. and wife, Jean, of Oxford, Edward H. West and wife, Carolyn, of Cary, and Robert C. West Sr. and wife, Bonnie, of Oxford; a sister, Sallie H. Jordan of Raleigh; six grandchildren, W. Keith West, Cammie W. McCracken, Edward H. West Jr., Robert C. West Jr., Scott D. West, and Jason B. West; and eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7:00 to 9:00 at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at her home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Mrs. Lorene Hargrove Braxton, age 88, a resident of 2402 Oakridge Blvd., formerly of Henderson, expired on Thursday, September 27, 2001, at the Granville Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Hargrove and Virginia Terry Hargrove and was born in Mecklenburg Co., Va.
She was educated in the Vance County public schools and at the former Henderson Institute. She was a member of Antioch United Church of Christ, where she was a faithful member of the Missionary Club. She later joined Morning Star United Holy Church.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Nutbush Baptist Church by Elder Shirley Piercy. The burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her children, Garland Braxton, Jr., of Hampton, Va., Beatrice Brame-Hanks, Olivia B. Fisher, both of Henderson, Hattie Blue-Yarborough, of Durham, Marie Wimbush, Josephine Glover, and Linda B. Henderson, all of Henderson; 24 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchild-ren; one foster sister, Corine Hargrove; and two foster daughters, Stacy Hargrove and Geneva Williams.

HENDERSON - Margaret Powers Griffin, 71, of 173 Lynn Haven Avenue, died Sunday, April 29, 2001 at 4:10 a.m., after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 30, 2001, at First Baptist Church, in Henderson, NC at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Dr. Marion D.Lark. The burial will immediately follow at Sunset Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday April 29, 2001 at Flowers Funeral Home on 1833 Oxford Road in Henderson. Born in Lumberton, NC on August 31, 1929, she was the eldest child of Julius Hallie and Mary Wellington Powers. Her childhood was spent in Robeson County where she graduated from Barker Ten Mile School. She earned AB and BS degrees from Mars Hill College and East Carolina University. She did graduate work at The University of Montana at Billings and American University in Washington, DC.
Margaret's dedication to education and social work was demonstrated by her years of service teaching in Wake County and on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Lamedeer, Montana. She was a social worker in Rocky Mount and in the counties of Vance, Franklin, and Nash. She was a Family and Children's Supervisor in Vance County. She was the State and District "Social Worker of the Year" in 1978.  Margaret was a good friend to many. She was a Sunday School teacher, an avid reader, a sports aficionado, a gardener, a bridge player, a traveler, and animal lover and lover of the arts. She was president of the A.A.R.P., President of the Rosemont Garden Club, President of the Henderson Women's Club, a member of the Colonial Garden Club, an active member of First Baptist Church of Henderson and President of her Church Circle. She worked with the Vance County Board of Elections for twelve years. She served as Chief Judge at the Hillside precinct.
Margaret is predeceased by her father, Julius Hallie Powers, her mother, Mary Wellington Powers and brothers James Horace and John Dixon Powers.  She is survived by her husband and closest friend of forty-nine years Guy Livingstone Griffin. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jack (Mary) James Of Oak Island, NC and Mrs. Jean Worcester of Lumberton, NC. Margaret had eight nieces ten great-nieces, ten nephews; and nine great-nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 205 W. Winder Street, Henderson, NC 27536. Honorary guests at the funeral service will be The "Joy" and the Dorothy Currin School Classes of First Baptist Church, the Vance Board of Elections, Bridge Clubs, AARP and Colonial Garden Club.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Pete Ivey, W.R. Duke, Rusty Duke, Jeff Wood, Ronnie Keith Lassiter, Steve Garrison, Johnny Roberts, Derik Willetts, Dause Dement Moses Moye, and Garrett Griffin.

HENDERSON - Thomas Worth "Bill" Frazier Jr., age 77, a resident of 1723 Lynne Ave., passed away at his residence on Friday. He was native of Vance County and was the son of the late Thomas Worth Frazier Sr. and Vernice Watkins Frazier.
He was a decorated World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, participating in first wave invasions of the Marshall Islands, Saipan, and Iwo Jima. He was retired from General Telephone Company after spending 46 years in the telephone industry. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2417, American Legion Post 60, Forty and Eight, and Henderson Masonic Lodge 229 AF & AM.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles M. Cook and Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will follow in the Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rebecca Clayton Frazier, two sons, Thomas W. Frazier III and wife, Pat, and Clayton Gill Frazier and wife, Billie, and one daughter, Reba Ann Frazier, all of Henderson; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Frazier, Matt Frazier, Gill Frazier, and Tate Frazier; four sisters, Polly F. Hobgood and Peggy F. Pegram, both of Henderson, and Iris F. Southerland and Jane F. Kittrell, both of Louisburg; and four brothers, Fred D. Frazier Jr., of Weldon, Dr. Richard E. Frazier, of Roanoke Rapids, Eugene Frazier, of Newport News, Va., and Kirby Frazier, of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7:00 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Tommy and Pat Frazier at 1812 Parker Ln.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Terry Frazier, Jeff Frazier, Freddy Frazier, LaVern Dement, Frankie Hobgood, Randy Clayton, Larry Clayton, David Clayton, Donnie Southerland, Weldon Lloyd, and Elbert Dement Jr.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all members of the First United Methodist Church Men's Bible Class, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion Forty and Eight, and the Henderson Masonic Lodge 229.

HENDERSON - Frances Wrenn Capps, 84, of 3321 Old Watkins Rd., Oxford, died Friday, March 2, 2001, in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Eunice Newton Wrenn.
Mrs. Capps was a retired supervisor with Continental Hosiery Company. She was a lifelong and very active member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the administrative board and the Tuesday Morning Bible Study. She served as social secretary of the Open Door Sunday School Class and was a past-president of the Rehoboth Methodist Women.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Rehoboth United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Benjamin W. Rooker. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband of 69 years, James Gilbert Capps; a daughter, Eunice C. May and husband, Robert, of Oxford; a son, G. Maurice Capps and wife, Addria "Puddin," of Hickory; four grandchildren, Tommy May and wife, Kathy, of Oxford, and Diane M. Ennis and husband, Jerry, Gil Capps, and Addria Capps, all of Charlotte; three great-grandchildren, Rob Stevens and wife, Michelle, of Chesapeake, Va., and Thomas May and Allison May, both of Oxford; a sister, Lucy W. Stovall, of Oxford; and a brother, Frank T. Wrenn and wife, Carrie, of Oxford. She was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin D. Wrenn.

HENDERSON - Russell Franks "Whitey" Eaves, 73, of 239 Eaves Rd., in the Epsom community, died Thursday, November 8, 2001, in Raleigh Community Hospital in Raleigh.
Born in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Charlie O'Brient and Addie Lou Ayscue Eaves.
Mr. Eaves was a retired sales representative with Coastal Chemical Company. He was a farmer and owned and operated General Insurance Agency. He was president of the Epsom Country Club and was a member of the Shoe and Slipper Club.
He was a member of Liberty Vance United Church of Christ, where funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m., conducted by the Rev. John R. Yevak and the Rev. Tammy Ayscue. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Summerlin Alford Eaves; two daughters, Kaye E. Thrasher and husband, Larry of Annapolis, Md., and Tammy E. Ayscue and husband, Robin of Oxford; a son, Russell S. Eaves and wife, Deborah of Greenville; a step-daughter, Amy E. Alford of Raleigh; a step-son, Kevin M. Alford and wife, Kay of Youngsville; two sisters, Christine E. Oakley of Mebane and Mary Nell E. Greene of Norfolk, Va.; a brother, Charles T. Eaves and wife, Garnetta of Epsom; five grandchildren, Harrison Thrasher, Colin Thrasher, Addison Ayscue, Kara Ayscue, and Tyler Eaves; and two step-grandchildren, Cameron Alford and Casey Alford.

HENDERSON - David Thomas, "D.T." Ayscue, Jr., age 71, a resident of 246 Crestwood Road, died Sunday, August 26, 2001, at his home.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late D.T. and Elsie Faulkner Ayscue. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a retired Area Supervisor with Flu-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation. He was a member of the First Baptist Church the Adult Men's Sunday School Class, and the Henderson Lions Club.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church by Dr. Marion D. Lark.  He is survived by his wife, Nancy McLemore Ayscue, of the home daughter, Nancy Lu Ayscue Baker and husband, Thomas, of Henderson; son, David T. Ayscue, III and wife Joan, of Vienna, West Virginia and grandchildren, Daniel T. Baker, Sarah Nancy Baker, David T. Ayscue, IV, Catherine Marie Ayscue and Megan Ayscue.
The family will receive friends at the home at 246 Crestwood Road and immediately following the service in the Ladies Parlor of the First Baptist Church.

HENDERSON -- Ralph Benton Hight, Sr., age 81, a resident of 1116 Hargrove Street, died Wednesday afternoon at Granville Medical Center in Oxford. He was a native of Vance County, the son of the late James Eppy and Cora Woodlief Hight, and was the widower of Jeannette Robertson Hight.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II. He was a retired Vice President of the former Peoples Bank, now Centura Bank, where he worked for 45 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and the Men's Bible Class. He was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Forty and Eight.
Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Cam Ford and Jack Richardson. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
He is survived by one daughter, Ellen H. Clapp and husband Don, of Raleigh; two sons, Ralph Benton Hight, Jr. and wife Mary Nell, of Oxford, and Wesley Lee Hight and wife, Cathy, of Henderson, three grandchildren, Mary Royall Hight, Wesley Lee Hight, Jr., and Branson Perry Hight.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at his home on Hargrove Street.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Hank Reaves, Andy Clayton, Dalton Newman, Bob Lloyd, Henry W. Hight, Jr., Mike Satterwhite, Billy C. Stanton, Tommy Tucker, Whit Sutton, W.C. Hight, William Cawthorne, and James Bennett.
