RALEIGH -- Lucille Newton Williams, 85, died on Monday, May 13, 2002 at the Mayview Convalescent Center. Born on July 24, 1916 in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Josie Moss Newton Ad- cock and Brocius D. Adcock. She was predeceased by her husband, Chalmon A. Williams, and a brother, Dr. Maurice Newton.
Surviving are her brother, Fred W. Newton and sister-in-law, Alice Truelove Newton of Greenville, NC and the following nephews and nieces, Fred Newton Jr. of Parkersburg, W. VA, Dr. Dale Newton of Greenville, NC, Betsy Newton Herman of Raleigh, NC, Sharon Newton of Charlotte, Nancy Newton Love of Paris, TX, Toby Newton of Efland, NC, Maureen Newton of East Lansing, MI, and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
She graduated from Aycock High School in Vance County, attended Campbell College (now University), and graduated from East Carolina Teachers' College (now University). She taught school for 41 years in Winterville, NC; Morristown, TN; Knoxville, TN and a Zeb Vance and Aycock Schools in Vance County. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Teachers' Sorority, and numerous educational associations. She took much satisfaction in the profession of teaching and gave many hours in the classroom and outside the classroom to the education and encouragement of her students. She once commented, "It is a joy to look back and see that many of my students have gone on to further their education and be- come professionals in their fields." In the North Carolina Health Care Facilities Association 2000-2001 Membership Directory, she was featured on the cover and quoted as giving the following advice to educators: "Love the children and love the work." She was active in the Carey Baptist Church of Henderson, where she served as organist, pianist, Sunday School teacher, and numerous other roles.
A graveside service will be held at Carey Baptist Church Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, by Dr. Dennis Herman.
The family will receive friends in the Church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

HENDERSON - Frances Lloyd Bradsher Pendergrass, age 59, a resident of 166 Parrott Road, died Tuesday night at Duke Medical Center. A native of Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Lee and Anna Brummitt Lloyd, and the widow of James M. Pendergrass, Sr. She was retired as a Sales Correspondent from Harriett & Henderson Yarns, Inc., where she worked for thirty-three years and was employed as a Secretary with Commercial Seaming Co. of Henderson.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Circle #4 and Fellowship Class, and was very active with the Vance County Relay For Life, of which she served as co-chairman of the Survivors Committee, and was a volunteer at Maria Parham Hospital.
She is survived by two sons, Stoney Bradsher and wife, Donna, of Kittrell, and James M. Pendergrass, Jr. of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; one sister, Alice L. Preddy of Henderson; one brother, Dennis Lloyd, and wife Sallye, of Henderson; one grandchild, Lori N. Bradsher; and one sister-in-law, Mae B. Lloyd, of Henderson. She was preceded in death by one brother, Hamlin L. Lloyd.
The family will receive friends Friday night from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at her home at 166 Parrott Road, Henderson. Surviving as active pallbearers will be Mike Lloyd, Bill Lloyd, Bob Lloyd, Donnie Lloyd, W. L. Preddy, Chris Daniel, David Pendergrass and Jason Daniel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 114 Church Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536, or the Vance County Relay For Life, c/o Mrs. Betty Hester, 2110 Woodland Road, Henderson, NC 27536.

HENDERSON - Maysel Pace Howland, 81, of 2410 Oxford Rd., died Saturday, July 27, 2002, in Britthaven Nursing Home in Wilson.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Bryant Nicholas and Cassie Goodson Pace. She was the widow of Leland McIntosh Howland.
Mrs. Howland was a retired teller at the former First National Bank. She also served as a substitute teacher in the Vance County school system. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in Elmwood Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Charles M. Cook.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Helen Saunders and husband, Mike of Jackson, Tenn., and Catherine M. Howland of Wilson; one grandson, Grover Michael Saunders II and wife, Laura of Huntsville, Ala.; three sisters, Mary Fuller Evans, Hazel P. Peck, and Amelia P. Kittrell and husband, W. A. "Billy," all of Henderson; and two brothers, B. G. Pace and wife, Jane of Virginia Beach, Va., and Edwin Pace of Cary.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 114 Church St, Henderson NC 27536; or to the Vance County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, PO Box 914, Henderson NC 27536.
