John L. Ward applied in Warren county North Carolina August 6, 1833 personally age 70, states he was born in BUTE COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA now Warren Co N C 12 July 1763, that he was drafted March 8, 1780 at Thomas Christmas' in Warren Co where Warrenton is now situated; thence he went to   KINGSTON with Thomas Thomas   when he was drafted at the same time there he joined Gen Wm. Caswell? regiment , he was at different times under Col James Allen and Isaack Sersone? and Maj Bowman? also served under Capt Christmas, L?  Perkins and C Merrit? continued there to West Point now Waynesburgh; thence to Cross Creek now Fayetteville, thence Cherow Hills and Pedee thence to Pine Tree now Camden; thence to McCord's Ferry on Congarece on our way to Charleston, - heard of Lincolns surrendering the town of Charleston and returned towards the Santee crossing that river now where Tarleton defeated Col Washington and White, thence up said river to Wrights Bluff- much other service is outlined but very Illegible--- mentions on one road he saw a little cabin on the road   and called and received from the hands of and old lady a glass of milk while drinking the same the horse began prancing I looked behind, saw a cloud of dust a rising, I then with all speed gave notice and information to the rear gard  that the enemy was at hand.  I then pushed for the river where I found the army nearly all crossed over then I forced   in to the river, when the enemy arrived at the bank and ordered me to stop or I would be dead man but I forcing the horse in a  still more rapid  manner, they fired a volley of balls at me  which so much   alarmed the horse and myself to but I lost my hold on my horse   but both arrived safely on the opposite bank safe and sound,  (he tells other exciting incidents) Later he volunteered under Capt Wm Christmas and was accepted and was frequently after tories in service and deserters until 1781 about 10 Feb. at the Waxsaws we fell under care of Colo Marlberry commander of the horse and continued with him until the battle of Guilford and Continued with the army to Ramseys Mill or deep river   there received my discharge the 5th of April which I have misplaced. He had a sea voyage and gives details regarding it - - under Capt Hornett, and served with Charles Whitehead, James Ranson, Sugar Jones --- again 24 Feb 1834 he applied again in Warren Co, NC
