FUNERAL FOR PERRY CHILD HELD THURSDAY
Funeral services were conducted at the Heck family home in Perry township Thursday afternoon of last week for Betty Jean Heck, baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Heck, who died February 27, 1934 after an illness of a couple of days which started with a severe cold. The services were in charge of Rev. S. L. Hammond, pastor of the Langdon Presbyterian church. Interment was in Lebanon cemetery. Pallbearers were Roy, Elmer, Harvey, and Clarence Herriott, all uncles of the deceased. The child was born December 30, 1932.
Six sisters and four brothers survive with the parents. They are Margaret, Florence, Anna, Mary, Alice, Ruby, Edward, Charlie, Robert, and Raymond. Her two grandmothers and several uncles and aunts also survive.

Edward Heck dies, funeral held Saturday
Funeral services were held Saturday morning for Edward W. Heck, 68, prominent Perry Township farmer who died Tuesday, April 8, 1980, at a Langdon hospital. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Edward's Catholic Church at Nekoma with the Rev. Jacob N. Czapiewski as celebrant. Mrs. Joan Viger was the organist and Robert Loff sang "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross." A prayer service was held Friday evening at the Brooks Funeral Chapel in Langdon.
Interment was in St. Edward's Catholic Cemetery at Nekoma. Casket bearers were Larry Schmidt, Richard Strong, Douglas Heck, Mike Slaybough, Scott Dietz, and Tom Heck. All his relatives and friends were designated honorary bearers.
Edward W. Heck was born December 2, 1911, in Perry Township, Cavalier County. He was the son of Christian Heck and Myrtle Herriot Heck, well-known Perry Township couple. His father, who homesteaded in the township, died September 4, 1969. His mother died December 26, 1967.
He lived in Perry Township during his entire lifetime, except when he served in the US Army and from 1945 until 1948, when he lived in Nekoma. Since 1948 he had farmed in Perry Township where he served as township assessor for 30 years. He also served on the Cavalier County Selective Service Board for 20 years.
He served in the US Army from January 20, 1942 until March 6, 1945, including combat duty in the Asiatic Theater, where he was wounded. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal. He belonged to Langdon Post No. 98 of the American Legion and Borusky-Krahn Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars at Langdon.
Edward Heck and Elsie Barbara Dietz were married November 28, 1945, at Nekoma. She survives with four sons, two daughters, and five grandchildren.
The sons who survive are Kenneth Heck, Milton; Donald Heck, Nekoma; and David Heck and Randy Heck, both of Langdon. The daughters are Mrs. William (Janette) Bryan of Slayton, Minn., and Mrs. Donald (Linda) Stansberry of Phoenix, Ariz.
Three brothers and five sisters also survive. The brothers are Charles Heck, Chicago; Robert Heck, Nekoma; and Raymond Heck, Alsen. The sisters are Mrs. Harry (Florence) Strong, Osnabrock; Mrs. Margaret Marynik, Sacramento, Calif.; Mrs. Louie (Ann) Wohletz, Alsen; Mrs. Alerd (Marie) Slaybough, Nekoma; and Mrs. Robert (Ruby) Peterson, Minnetonka, Minn. Two sisters, Alice and Betty Jean, besides his parents, predeceased him.

Mrs. Charles Heck dies, funeral held in Langdon April 29
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon of last week for Mrs. Charles (Florence) Heck, 72, native of Cavalier County and resident of Osnabrock since 1962. She died Saturday, April 26, 1980, at a Langdon hospital.
The funeral was held in Langdon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James G. Towler officiating. Mrs. R. E. Forkner was the organist. The church choir sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder," and the congregation sang "How Great Thou Art." A prayer service was held Monday evening at the Brooks Funeral Chapel in Langdon. Interment was in Zion Cemetery, north of Osnabrock. Casket bearers were Linden Johnson, George Balsdon, Keith Balsdon, Garnett Kaercher, Ervin Gustafson, and Carlton Flaten.
The former Florence Herriot was born September 28, 1907, in Perry Township, Cavalier County. She was the daughter of William Herriot and Amanda Sykes Herriot, who were married in 1887 at Osnabrock. Her father died November 26, 1930, and her mother passed away December 12, 1938.
She was reared on the family farm in Perry Township and was married September 10, 1931, to Charles Heck in Zion Evangelical Church, north of Osnabrock. They farmed in Terry and Hay townships until they moved to Osnabrock in 1962. She was a member of the Methodist Church and its ladies aid and of the Osnabrock American Legion Auxiliary.
Her husband survives with 10 sons, four daughters, 37 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The sons are Duane Heck, Osnabrock; Gordon Heck, Tolna; Selmer Heck, Warren Minn.; James Heck and Leonard Heck, both of Langdon; Carlton Heck, Walhalla; Richard Heck, Concrete; Larry Heck and David Heck, both of Fargo; and Marvin Heck, Rolla. The daughters are Mrs. Willard (Margorie) Thompson, Calvin; Mrs. John W. (Caroline) Knutson, Cavalier; and Mrs. Larry (Janice) Peterson and Mrs. Richard (Connie) Close, both of Langdon.
Mrs. Archie (Mae) Holmes of Bathgate and Mrs. Frank (Barbara) Goette of Emily, Minn., are two sisters who also survive. Two other sisters and five brothers, besides her parents predeceased her, as did a great-grandson and great-granddaughter.

Rites Held For Christian Heck
Funeral services were held September 6, 1969, at the Langdon Presbyterian church for Christian John Heck, 91, who died September 4, 1969, in a Langdon hospital. Rev. Jesse Patrick officiated at the service and burial was in Lebanon cemetery. Mrs. Dennis Luhmann was organist and accompanied Harvey Johnston, who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Softly and Tenderly."
Pallbearers were six grandsons of the deceased, Gregory Heck, Thomas Heck, Kenneth Heck, Donald Heck, Curtis Heck, and Richard Strong. Ushers for the services were Birney Dahl and Duane Heck.
Christian Heck was born December 16, 1877, in Germany, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Heck. He came to the Langdon area from Germany and homesteaded in Perry township where he farmed until 1945. He then moved to Nekoma where he made his home until January 1968 when he went to the Pembilier Nursing center at Walhalla.
He served as assessor for Perry township for 33 years and was a member of the Perry township school board.
Mr. Heck and Myrtle Herriot were married December 8, 1903 at Langdon. Mrs. Heck died December 26, 1967. He is survived by 10 children, Mrs. Harry (Florence) Strong of Osnabrock, Mrs. Alerd (Marie) Slaybaugh of Nekoma, Edward Heck of Langdon, Mrs. Robert (Ruby) Peterson of Minnetonka, Minn., Mrs. Peter (Margaret) Marynik of Sacramento, Calif., Robert Heck of Nekoma, Charles Heck of Chicago, Mrs. Clifford (Alice) Danielson of Rolette, Mrs. Louie (Ann) Wohletz of Alsen, and Raymond Heck of Alsen. Thirty-five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Betty Jean, who died in 1934.

Funeral Held For Nekoma Woman
Funeral services were held Friday from the Langdon Presbyterian church for Mrs. Christian Heck of Nekoma. Mrs. Heck died December 26, 1967, at a Langdon hospital. Rev. James Ford was in charge of the funeral. Harvey Johnston was soloist, with Mrs. Ford at the organ. Pallbearers were six grandsons of the deceased, Richard Strong, Gregory, Thomas, Kenneth, Donald, and Curtis Heck. Burial was in Lebanon cemetery at Langdon.
Mrs. Heck was born Myrtle Elizabeth Herriot at Ardoch August 3, 1889. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. William Herriot, now deceased. The family moved to Easby township and later homesteaded in Perry township.
Myrtle Herriot and Christian Heck were married at Langdon December 8, 1908. They farmed in Perry township until 1945, when they retired and moved into Nekoma.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Heck is survived by ten children, 35 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Harry Strong, Osnabrock; Edward Heck, Langdon; Mrs. Louis Wohletz and Raymond Heck, Alsen; Mrs. Alerd Slaybaugh and Robert Heck, Nekoma; Mrs. Peter Marynik, Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. Robert Peterson, Minnetonka, Minn.; Charles Heck, Chicago, and Mrs. Clifford Danielson, Rolette. Another daughter, Betty Jean, died in 1934.
Mrs. Heck is also survived by two brothers, William Herriot, Nekoma, and Harvey Herriot, Jamestown, and three sisters, Mrs. Charles Heck, Osnabrock; Mrs. Mae Holmes, Langdon, and Mrs. Barbara Goette, Emily, Minn.

Raymond Heck
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998 for Raymond Heck, 73, of Nekoma. He died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998 at the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital in Langdon. Services were held at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Nekoma with Reverend Michael Schommer officiating. Music was provided by Joan Viger, organist. Musical selections were Here I Am Lord, Amazing Grace, Blest Are They and On Eagle's Wings. Interment was in St. Edward's Cemetery, Nekoma. Pallbearers were Kenneth Heck, Douglas Heck, Terry Kubat, Donald Heck, Dean Erickson, and Richard Wilhelmi. Honorary bearers were all his friends and neighbors.
Raymond John Heck was born Sept. 13, 1924 to Christian and Myrtle (Harriet) Heck in Langdon. He attended Perry Township (Cavalier County) School and a mechanics school in Langdon. He was united in marriage to Margaret Erickson on Oct. 5, 1949 at St. Edward's Catholic Church of Nekoma. They lived in Perry Township where they farmed from 1950 to 1987. They then moved to Nekoma where Raymond was active in the community including serving as mayor for many years, serving on the Nekoma Fire Department and the Nekoma Town Board. He drove school bus for 13 years.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Curtis of Nekoma and Wayne (Roxane) of West St. Paul, Minn.; one daughter, Diane (Bob) Simmons of Langdon; five grandchildren, William Snyder, Erin Heck, Andrea Fischer, Courtney and Drew Simmons; two brothers, Charlie (Dorothy) of Chicago and Robert (Lucille) of Nekoma; and four sisters, Margaret Marynik of Sacramento, Calif., Ann (Louis) Wohletz of Langdon, Marie Slaybaugh of Nekoma, and Ruby (Bob) Peterson of Minnetonka, Minn.; and one sister-in-law Elsie Heck of Langdon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sharon Heck; three sisters, Florence Strong, Alice Danielson, and Betty Heck; one brother, Edward Heck; and three brothers-in-law.
Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. WM. HERRIOT FUNERAL RITES READ WEDNESDAY - Resident of Northeastern Section Since 1878 Dies Monday At Age of 70
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Langdon Presbyterian church for Mrs. William Herriot, a resident of northeastern North Dakota since 1878, who passed away Monday, December 12, 1938, at her home south of Langdon.
Mrs. Herriot was born Amanda Sykes at Ashton, Ont., October 24, 1868. In July 1878, she left with her parents for Dakota Territory, making part of the trip by boat across Lake Superior and down the Red River. They docked at Fischer's landing, near what is now Grand Forks and went on to Turtle River, near what is now Manvel, where Mr. Sykes had previously filed on a claim.
Five years later the Red River overflowed, inflicting such hardship and damage to the land that they were forced to move west and in 1883 came to Cavalier county, settling five miles west of Osnabrock. At that time, they were located farther west than any others in that area. The nearest post office was five miles away, and St. Thomas was the nearest settlement, where their grain and hauled and trading done.
June 3, 1887, she was married to William Herriot of Ardoch, and they lived on his farm in that vicinity until 1895. Then after spending a year on her father's claim, they established themselves eight and one-half miles south of Langdon, where she had since resided.
Eleven children were born to them, all but one of whom survive. They are William J. Herriot of Nekoma, Mrs. Christian Heck of Loma, Mrs. Archie Holmes of Langdon, Mrs. Frank Goette of Crosby, Minn., Hiram R. Herriot of Langdon, Elmer E. Herriot of Langdon, Henry C. Herriot, Mrs. Charles Heck of Langdon, Gladys L. Herriot of Langdon, Harvey A. Herriot of Langdon. One daughter, Margaret Dorothy, passed away in 1904 at the age of three years. Mrs. Herriot was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away November 24, 1930.
Rev. Ellsworth Moritz was in charge of the services, which began at 2:30 PM. Interment was in Lebanon cemetery. Pallbearers were Harvey Johnston, Irvin Jacobson, Joe Rourke, John Dick, Gordon Ramage, and C. A. Bone.

Elmer E. Herriot Funeral Held Here Wednesday
Funeral services were held at the Langdon Presbyterian church, Wednesday afternoon for Elmer E. Herriot, operator of a service station at Nekoma. Mr. Harriot was last seen late Saturday evening, and was found dead in a back room of his station Sunday morning, January 1, 1961. States Atty. Robert Q. Price and Sheriff R. H. Haaven were called and investigated. No inquest was deemed necessary.
The Rev. James H. Ford, pastor of the church, officiated. Interment was in Lebanon cemetery where his parents are buried. Pallbearers were Oscar Oyos, Harry Johnson, Russell Lillico, Clarence Smith, Peter Bachel, and Robert Dietz.
Elmer Edward Herriot was born January 24, 1899, at the family farm in Perry township. His parents were William and Amanda Sykes Herriot, both now deceased. He was reared in the township and farmed there until moving to Nekoma to enter into business. He had never married.
Three brothers and four sisters survive. They are William J. Herriot of Nekoma; Harvey Herriot of Jamestown; Raymond Herriot of Langdon; Myrtle, who is Mrs. Chris Heck of Nekoma; May who is Mrs. Archie Holmes of Langdon; Florence, who is Mrs. Charles Heck of Osnabrock; and Barbara, who is Mrs. Frank Goette of Emily, Minn. Another brother, Henry Clarence Herriot, died December 11, 1958. Two sisters also predeceased him. Gladys died April 5, 1956, and Maggie died in infancy. Mr. Herriot's father died November 24, 1930, and his mother died December 12, 1938.

Mattie, the four-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Herriot, died at the family home in Perry township last Saturday afternoon from an attack of cholera morbus from which she was sick for nearly a week. The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the home, and interment made in Lebanon cemetery. Tuesday two more members of the family were ailing from the same complaint, but at this writing were feeling much improved. |

William Herriot Funeral Is Held From City Church
Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Langdon Presbyterian Church for William Herriot, a resident of the Nekoma area for nearly 50 years, who died May 31, 1970, at a Langdon hospital. Rev. Jesse Patrick officiated at the services. Mrs. Dennis Luhmann was organist, and Mrs. Marvin Moen was soloist. Pallbearers were Edward Heck, Raymond Heck, Robert Heck, Duane Heck, Gordon Heck, and Mike Kruk. Burial was in Lebanon cemetery at Langdon. Joe Lorenz, Oscar Oyos, Birney Dahle, Alex Borho, Jack Prince, Adolph Haugen, Hal Nickerson, William Coffey, and Martin Gjesdal were honorary pallbearers.
William John Herriot was born at Ardoch July 26, 1888, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Herriot. He lived at Ardoch until coming to Nekoma in 1922. He married the former Ina Smith October 28, 1913. She died in 1923. A retired farmer, Mr. Herriot was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. He had lived at the Edmore rest home for two years before his death.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Nova) Heck of Osnabrock and Mrs. Selmer (Beatrice) Gjesdal of Nekoma; a brother, Harvey Herriot of Henninger; and three sisters, Mrs. May Holmes of Langdon, Mrs. Charles (Florence) Heck of Osnabrock, and Mrs. Nellie Goette of Emily, Minn.

COUNTY PIONEER DIES AT FAMILY HOME MONDAY - Funeral for William Herriot Held at Presbyterian Church Wednesday
The ranks of Cavalier county's real pioneer were further depleted Monday morning when William Herriot died at the Herriot farm home in Perry township southeast of Langdon. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church in Langdon Wednesday afternoon, November 26, 1930, with Rev. C. H. Dirks officiating. Old friends and neighbors who carried the remains to their resting place in Lebanon cemetery were Ben Davidson, William Heapy, Robert Flack, Parker Whitehouse, H. L. Nickeson, and William Stevenson.
William Herriot, son of William and Barbara Herriot, was born in Arthur township, Mount Forest, Ontario, November 17, 1853. He came to Ardoch in this state in 1883. He was married June 3, 1887 to Amanda Sykes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Sykes of Osnabrock, at her home. In 1895 they moved to Osnabrock where they lived about two years, then moving to the present home in Perry township, building up one of the outstanding farms of the community.
The standing of the deceased in the community where he lived is best shown by the fact that he was chosen to serve as a Perry township supervisor for 12 years.
His widow survives and with her are five daughters and as many sons. They are Mrs. Christian Heck of Loma, Mrs. Archie Holmes of Langdon, Mrs. Frank Goette of Crosby, Minn., Florence and Gladys both at home, William J. of Nekoma, H. Clarence of Park River and Elmer, Roy and Harvey all at home. Maggie, another daughter, died in her infancy in 1904. Seventeen grandchildren also survive.
Two brothers, John and George, both of Mount Forest, Ont., and four sisters, Mrs. Mary McMeekin and Miss Jane of Mount Forest, Mrs. Elizabeth Kerr of Cederville, Ont., and Mrs. Margaret Tighe of Craik, Sask., also survive.
All the children were at home at the time of their father's death except Clarence, who teaches at Park River and Mrs. Goette, who lives in Minnesota. Clarence arrived for the funeral. A large number of friends and relatives attended the services in spite of very cold weather, paying respects to a man whom they knew as true, helpful, and willing friends and neighbor.

May Irene Holmes
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 2, 1987, for May Irene Holmes, 95, Langdon. May Holmes died Sunday, November 29, 1987, at Cavalier County Memorial Hospital, Langdon. The funeral was held at First United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Frank Ewert officiating. Organist for the service was Mrs. Pauline Spenst, and Mrs. John Knudson and Mrs. Gordon Heck, duet. Mrs. Willard Knudson accompanied the duet. Musical selections included "How Great Thou Art," "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," and "The Church In The Wildwood." Congregational song was "Fairest Lord Jesus."
Interment was in Lebanon Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Jeff Kruk, Charles Wilkes, Robert Weiner, Charles Olmanson, Gordon Heck, and Clarence Goette. All her friends and relatives served as honorary bearers.
May Holmes was born November 6, 1892, at Ardoch, ND, the daughter of William and Amanda (Sykes) Herriot. As a youth, she moved to Perry Township with her parents. She was raised, educated, and lived on the farm in Perry Township until 1941. She married Samuel A. Holmes November 6, 1917. In 1941 they moved to Elgin Township and lived there until 1949. In 1949 they moved into Langdon. She has been a resident of Maple Manor Nursing Home for the past five years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Langdon.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Kruk of Langdon; three grandchildren, Jerry Kruk, Gene Kruk, and Mrs. Harvey (Linda) Hope, all of Langdon; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, and five sisters.
Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon, was in charge of the arrangements.
