West Point, Neb., Feb. 24 - Miss Elisa Metz took a three days vacation the first of the week.

She visited Omaha relatives, returning Wednesday evening.

 

A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Wells last Thursday.

 

Miss Clara Wiesner entertained a number of her friends at there home on Lincoln Street Friday.

 

John A. Carlson of Cuming Township will dispose of his live stock and farm machinery at his farm.

 

W. H. Copple of Bancroft was in West Point last week. In the last year Mr. Copple has become a foot racer of national renown, and now challenges any man in the world to run a foot race.

 

Postmaster Rosa of Dodge spent a few days with West Point friends.

 

John Bardeshorst is getting his brick building in shape for the reception of F. W. Meichers agricultural Implements.

 

The Cuming County Teachers association convenes in the High school in West Point on March 2.

If the weather proves favorable a large attendance is expected. An elaborate program has been arranged, and everything is being done to make this session a pleasant and profitable one.

 

The Knights of Pythias lodge had installation of officers on last Monday night and a banquet on Tuesday evening in their rooms in the Campbell block. The banquet was attended by friends of the knights and was one of the enjoyable events of the season.

 

Miss Antoinette Zajicek went to Schuyler on last Tuesday, where she will visit for a time, after

which she will go to Villisca, Ia.

 

John McKeegan of Bancroft is in the city visiting friends.

 

County Treasurer J. F. Zajicek has purchased the residence of Joseph Kuntz.

 

Mrs. G. A. Nelberg and daughter Amelia and Mr. and Mrs. Gus Nelburg visited relatives in Oakland on last Sunday.

 

Contractor John Hoffman made a business trip to Omaha yesterday.

 

 

An excellent literary program was produced by the ladies of the Congregational church. Ice cream, candies and other dainty refreshments were served. One of the features was a tableau illustrating

the various characters of the time of Washington, dressed in the costumes of those times.

 

Rev. W. J. Paske of Norfolk preached in the Congregational church today.

 

Prof. D. C. O'Connor is in Omaha attending the Eastern Nebraska Teachers association.

 

Howard High came up from his studies at the Fremont Norman last evening to spend Sunday with his parents.

 

Rev. Parker of Norfolk is visiting Rev. Pierson of this city.

News from the Center of Prosperous Cuming County

 

West Point, Neb., Feb. 12 - R. P. MeGuire, late chairman of the board of supervisors, is back from his visit to Canada. He says that the Canucks are anxious to come in under Uncle Sams wing and believes that annexation will soon be brought about.

 

There will be an oratorical contest among the pupils of the High Schools of Northwest Nebraska, next month. The contest will be held in West Point.

 

The firm of Pospesilet and Hoffman dissolved partnership. Mr. Pospesilet will continue to run the bakery business.

 

Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Caltand entertained a number of their friends at their home Thursday evening.

 

George W. Felter went to Wayne Friday, where he will take charge of the grain elevator at that place. Aaron Schuirer has taken Mr. Felter's place in the firm of Nys. Snyder & Co.

 

A. A. Campbell returned from Hot Springs, Ark., Friday, where he has been absent four months.

 

The citizens of West Point were rather startled when they heard of the closing of the doors of B. Mannefeld's large shoe store in this city. The liabilities are in the neighborhood of $10,000. The cause of the failure was too much stock and poor collections. The following mortgages have been filed: First National Bank, $2,850, Reglola Schlecter $300, F. Kock, $700, Morae Shoe Company $500, West Point National Bank $1,475, Peter Hussler $200, American Hand Sewed Shoe Company $1,574, Pinger & Smith, $435, Large & Anderson $2,460, Farners State Bank of Dodge $20 and J. L. Baker $41.
