Two Tornados on May 20, 1949
On May 20, 1949, there were two tornado touch down in Dundy County.  One of them began several miles south in Cheyenne County Kansas where it traveled across open country - taking out the Prairie Belle Schoolhouse then continued northward into Nebraska where it destroyed the Glenn Kuhns and Oren Bush farmsteads.  This funnel was 400 yards wide and traveled on the ground for about 30 miles.

One story was told of a man being taken from his porch in his rocking chair landing miles away with no injuries.  This story has not been verified as fact.

"I was very small when the tornado destroyed school #52 on the corner of my folks farm. I can remember it going up into the air and exploding like a balloon. Weeks later we were still finding pieces of it in the fields and pastures. That was the tornado that also damaged Kuhns and Bush's buildings in 1949."
--Karen (White) Lindell

Taken from a note from Karen (White) Lindell, who lived with her parents on a farm about 4 miles south of the Nebraska/Kansas state line and about 2-1/2 miles east of our home.

The school was located between her home and ours.  I remember my mother grabbing my little brother under her arm and my hand running down the sidewalk toward the "ice house" which was lower than ground level.  There was huge drops of rain hitting the sidewalk as we ran along.  We watched the tornado travel just east of our barn going from southwest to northeast.  It is a sight I will never forget.

Bush house
These pictures show the scene left by a tornado that went thru the Oren Bush farm.  This devastating storm hit the Glenn Kuhns farmstead first, just southeast of the Bush farm, literally destroying everything. Glenn and Myrtle Kuhns barely escaped by seeking shelter in their cellar just minutes before it hit. Mr. Bush was pulled from the house and dropped into the yard, but was not seriously injured. A close observation of the pictures will show the mysterious actions of a tornado.
