Jefferson County was formed in 1856 from unorganized land and was originally named Jones County. From 1864 to 1871 the land included present-day Thayer County. In 1864 Jefferson County was organized, and in 1871 the present-day boundaries were defined by Legislature and Jones Co was renamed Jefferson. The county seat of Fairbury was laid out in 1869.
