Charles Wookey
Charles Wookey died at his home near Helvey, Friday, March 3rd, aged 80 years. He was a native of England and came to this country when fourteen. He was married in 1839 to Huldah Rollins, who survives him as do six of their eight children. Three of these live in this vicinity, Stephen Wookey and Mrs. Wm. Robinson, in this county and Charles Wookey, in Haddam, Kans. Mr. Wookey came to Nebraska in 1871. He was converted to the Christian faith in 1854. The funeral was held Sunday at the Richland Centre U.B. church, conducted by Rev. R. Kreuger. Hulda Wookey
Mrs. Hulda Rollins Wookey was born in Ohio October 24, 1819 and departed this life at Fairbury, Nebr., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm Robinsons, 926 6th street August 12, 1909 aged 89 years, 9 months and 18 days. She was united in marriage to Charles Wookey, May, 1839, in Ohio. After a few years the family removed to Indiana where they resided for thirty years. To this union eight children were born, six are still living, their names are as follows: -- Mrs. Conrad of Indiana, George Wookey of Oklahoma, Mrs. Wm Robinson of Fairbury, Stephen and Charles Wookey of Powell, Nebr., and W.A. Wookey of Detroit, Michigan. In 1874 Mr. and Mrs. Wookey moved to Jefferson county, Nebr., where they have resided. The husband Charles Wookey departed this life March 3, 1899 at over eighty years of age. Mrs. Wookey was converted and united with the church when a young woman, after coming to Nebraska she was a member of the United Brethren Church, of which she was a member at the time of her departure. For the past six years her home has been with her daughter, Mrs. Wm Robinson. Grandma Wookey as she was called by those who knew her was a kind mother and a devoted Christian. The funeral service was held from the Richland Center church seven miles north of Fairbury on Saturday afternoon August 14, 1909. Rev. W.T. Cline officiating. Stephen Wookey
Stephen B. Wookey passed away at his home in Powell, Nebraska, Wednesday morning, May 9, 1923. Mr. Wookey began to fail in health several years ago. Within the past year his ailment developed to a form of creeping paralysis, affecting his lower limbs so that it has been very difficult for him to move about. He was born near Kokomo, Indiana, on January 10, 1851. At the time of his death he was 72 years, 3 months, 29 days old. He came west fifty years ago, settling in Jefferson county. On March 4, 1881 he was married to Susan Vickers of Fairbury. Seven children and the mother survive. The children are Mrs. Fred Price, Fairbury; Mrs. Walter Clark, Fleming, Colorado; Mrs. Leslie Rogers and Mrs. Henry Robinson both of Fairbury; Glen, Broadwater, Nebraska; John, of California and William, a resident of Canada. Mr. Wookey was well known by the old settlers of this region especially near Powell, where he has lived much of the time for the past half century. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the family home. Interment will be in the Powell cemetery. [The Fairbury Journal, Thursday, May 10, 1923]
