KELLY-HASKINS-TANGEMAN
By: Faye Portschy

Sometime around 1908, three brothers, Dan, Jim and Will Haskins left Roca, Nebraska and came to Loup County where they filed their claims under the Homestead Act.

By the fall of 1909 they persuaded some friends and relatives to come to Loup County and file for a homestead.  Among them were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Kelly and three sons, James, Daniel and Francis.  The Kelly's built a sod house near the Calamus River.  A daughter, Beatrice, was born on the homestead.  Mrs.Kelly was attended by midwife, Mrs. Ovitt.

The boys attended school in a sodhouse which was District 18.  Later in life Francis carried mail from the Harrop Postoffice to Ovitt and on to the Goodwill Postoffice.  Dan Haskins was postmaster at the Ovitt postoffice and John Harrop was postmaster at Harrop.

The Kellys returned to Roca in 1920.  Mr.and Mrs.Kelly, James and Francis are now deceased. Daniel lives in Roca, Nebraska and his sister Beatrice in Gage County.

Mr. and Mrs. Art Tangeman also came with the Kellys in the fall of 1909 and their homestead bordered the Chiles homestead on the south.  One of their daughters, Berneice Tangeman, still lives in the western part of the state.
