THOMAS AND ELIZA
RAISH

Thomas Raish was the son of Michael and
Maria (Frolich) Rosch. Michael was the oldest known Rosch ancestor,
was born at Engelsweis, Baden, German, in the year 1808 and married Maria
Frolich in the year of 1829. She was also born at Engelsweis in the
year 1800. In 1852 they, and their eight children left their
homeland of Germany aboard a ship bound for America and a new home.
The first three years after coming to this country the family lived at
Buffalo, New York. In 1855, they moved to Cattaraugua County, New
York and settled near the town of Allegany. From here the children
married and went their separate ways. Through the years the family
scattered to different areas of the United States and future generations
lost contact of their relatives. The spelling of the name Rosch was
changed by the sons, who chose the spelling "Raisch". Later members
of the family dropped the "c" and used the spelling of
"Raish".
Thomas Raish, Born December 9, 1840 was married in
Catturaugua County, New York, April 25, 1866, to Eliza Ann Hall, born
March 17, 1844, at Allegany, one of five daughters of David and Amanda
(Garrison) Hall of Olean, New York. In the early 1870's or possibly
before, Thomas and his family, his brother, Johan and his family, and
their parents, Michael and Maria Rosch, moved to Oshkosh,
Wisconsin. The family was engaged in the logging and lumber
business. There the parents died. Maria at Winneconne, May 22,
1877, and Michael, August 3, 1881.
Thomas and Eliza returned to New
York state for a time and in 1885, they accompanied a group of colonist to
Nebraska where they settled in the Madison Square Community of Loup
County. Thomas Raish became a citizen of the United States at the
courts in Taylor, Nebraska on September 13, 1893. He died at
his home in Sargent, January 4, 1926 at the age of 85 years. Eliza,
who became one of the pioneer religious works of the Free Methodist Church
in the North Loup Valley, died July 18, 1934, at 90 years of age, at
Sargent. They were the parents of five children: William, who
married Emma Strohl; David, married Anna Sears; Grace, married James
Bowley; Fred, who married Zora Carter.
