Who Shall Rule The Indian
United States or Thurston County to Run Reservation
The question whether the United States or Thurston County, Nebraska is to govern the Omaha and Winnebago Indian Reservation and the inhabitants thereof will, it is stated at the federal building, be nettled definitely within a few days.
Several days ago, as was told in the World-Herald, the county attorney of Thurston County filed an information against Acting Indian Agent Howell Morgan, and the county judge bound him over under $500 bonds, the charge again Morgan being for false imprisonment.
Morgan had had Henry Holt, an Indian, placed in the guard house, after having has a row with him and other Indians because he refused to let them leave the reservation.
Assistant United States District Attorney Rush, who went up to Pender to straighten out the difficulty, advised Morgan not to give bonds, and he is still in the custody of the sheriff at a hotel, there being no county jail.
Judge Munger is expected today, and he will at once be asked for a writ of habeas corpus, which will bring not only Morgan, but the sheriff, county attorney, county judge and others before the court. Confidence is expressed in the United States district attorney's office that a ruling will be made in the case which will effectually stop the practice of the state officials of constantly interfering in reservation affairs.
