Juan Fresqui

(abt. 1615 - before 1667)

Juan Frésqui and his unknown wife were the parents of our ancestor, María Magdalena Frésqui [abt. 1637-before 1695].  We know this from Origins of New Mexico Families, by Fray Angélico Chávez, p. 30.

Juan was the son of Juan Fresco, who came to New Mexico about the year 1617 with two other Flemish men [from today’s Belgium].  In Flemish the surname appears to have been spelled Frishz originally, but when the men arrived in Mexico City, the name was morphed to Fresco and later to Frésqui.  After Juan’s time, some New Mexicans further changed the name to Frésquez. We do not know who Juan’s mother was nor who his wife was.

Juan was a captain in the New Mexican army.  He was alcalde mayor of  Isleta, New Mexico.  He was dead by 1667.  Nothing else is known of him.

KNOWN CHILDREN OF JUAN FRÉSQUI

[1]        María Magdalena Frésqui was our ancestor.  She was married to Salvador Olguín [abt. 1637-?].  She appears to have survived the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 but was dead before 1695.  See their biographies elsewhere in this work.

[2]        Juana Frésqui, born about 1652, was married to José de Leyva de Nevares, a soldier.  He was away from home when the Pueblo Indians attacked their home at Galisteo on August 10, 1680.  Juana was killed and perhaps some of her children also.  Two daughters were taken captive by the Tanos of Galisteo, however.  In 1692 Juana’s nephew, Juan Olguín, in Diego de Vargas’ army, found his two cousins.  The elder sister, Ángela de Leyva, single, was found at San Juan Pueblo.  José de Leyva had remarried and was a soldier at Janos.

[3]        Francisco Frésqui was born about 1638 in New Mexico.  He was married to María Ortiz.  Francisco did not survive to be on the 1680 muster list after the Revolt.  He either died beforehand or was killed in the Revolt.  He must have had sons that were minors who survived the Revolt because it is through them that the Fresquis of New Mexico are descended.

[4]        María Ana Frésqui was born about 1655 in New Mexico.  She was married to Diego Varela de Losada, a kinsman of ours.  Nothing else is known of her.
