Birch, Robert A. Jr. - December 5, 2000

Services for Robert A. "Bob" Birch Jr., 64, of 1002 Vogel Road, Artesia, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Woodbine Cemetery. The Rev. Lewis Mowery will officiate.
Birch died Dec. 2 at Artesia General Hospital.
Pallbearers will be Mike Anderson, Chuck Birch, Harold Birch, Mike David, Mike Goss, Sam Karr, Bill Poe and Doug Warren. Honorary pallbearers are all close friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
Visitation will be at Terpening & Son Mortuary.
Birch was born March 6, 1936, in Charleston, Ill., to Robert A. and Vera (Wheeler) Birch. He married Marie Rigdon July 15, 1957 in Pecos, Texas and moved to Artesia in 1953 from Illinois. He was an automobile mechanic and 1954 graduate of Artesia High School. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include: wife Marie Birth of the home; parents Robert and Vera Birch of Charleston, Ill,; one daughter, Patti Pennington of Artesia; two brothers, Hugh Birch and Jim Birch of Illinois; one sister, Sue Warren of Cloudcroft; three grandsons, Brad Carlile, Bobby Carlile and Nathan Olguin, all of Artesia.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Sue Birch, in 1995.
Davis, Sabra Wilson - December 5, 2000
Closed casket services are scheduled at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 8, at First United Methodist Church, for Sabra Wilson Davis of 1905 Villa Drive.
Davis, 86, died Dec. 5 at her home.
Services will be conducted by Rev. Jean Riley with burial at Woodbine Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Harold Creswell, Bill Case, Jack Case, Bill Hull, Richard Price and Doyle Davis.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Thursday, at Terpening and Son Mortuary.
Born Dec. 8, 1913, in Lodgepole, S.D., to Gardner Wilson and Carrie Anderson Wilson, she married Homer A. Davis on May 19, 1937, in Hot Springs, S.D.
Davis came to Artesia in 1962 from Houma, La., and was a housewife. Prior to moving to Artesia, she lived in Mullen, Neb., Palisade, Neb., and Wichita, Kan.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Artesia Country Club Women's Golf Association.
Survivors include her husband, Homer A. Davis, of the family home; sisters LaVina Watson of Hettinger, N.D., and Risby Wilson Sattler of Roswell; brother Clay Wilson and his wife Marge, of Hettinger, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Tolof Wilson and Perkins Wilson and by her sisters Lima Wilson and Burness Martino.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
Dutchover, Matilde S. - November 29, 2000

Services for Matilde S. Dutchover, 73, of 404 Quail St., Artesia, who died at home Tuesday, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Lake Arthur, with Fr. Vincent Peterson officiating. Burial will be at Lake Arthur Cemetery.
A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Lake Arthur.
Pallbearers will be Ray Chavarria III, Kris Luna, Tommy Baeza, Lupe Salazar, Jesus Aguilar and David Ramirez.
Matilde Dutchover was born June 3, 1927, to Miguel and Tomasita (Lujan) Salazar in Artesia. She was a lifetime Artesia resident, and was a housekeeper at Sunset Villa Nursing Center.
She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, a foster parent and belonged to Curillistas. Survivors include: one daughter, Gina Chavarria and Ray of Artesia; one sister, Mary Baeza of Lake Arthur; four grandchildren, Ray Chavarria III and Liliana of Artesia, Regina Chavarria of Artesia, Rhonda Luna and Kris of Artesia and Renee Chavarria of Artesia; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Fenn, Ruth - December 3, 2000

Graveside services for Ruth Fenn, 1402 W. Gilchrist Ave. in Artesia, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Seminole Cemetery, Seminole, Texas.
Ruth Fenn, 100, died Nov. 30 at Artesia Good Samaritan Center.
Visitation will be at Terpening and Son Mortuary beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Vision 2000 Building Fund, 322 W. Grand Ave. in Artesia.
Fenn was born June 28, 1900, in Clairmont, Texas, to Joseph Howard and Lucy Frances (Jay) Grice. She married Herbert K. Fenn May 26, 1919, in Roswell. She came to Artesia from Seminole in 1983. She was a housewife and a member of First Baptist Church in Seminole.
Her husband, Herbert K. Fenn, preceded her in death May 17, 1967.
Survivors include: one son, Herbert Fenn of Salt Lake City, Utah; four grandchildren, Bill Fenn of Roswell, June Fenn of Salt Lake City, Sherry Fenn of Salt Lake City and Glen Fenn of Salt Lake City; and 6 great-grandchildren.
Hanna, Beulah E. - September 3, 2000

Services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 4 at Hope Church of Christ for Beulah E. Hanna of 2713 Menefee.
Hanna, 86, died Sept. 1 at Artesia General Hospital.
Clarence Forister will officiate the services. Burial will follow at Upper Hope Cemetery. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at Terpening & Son Mortuary.
Hanna was born July 7, 1914, in Wild Cherry, Ark., the son of Eli Benjamin Forister and Mary Elizabeth (Hale) Forister.
Her first marriage was on June 2, 1934, to Bill H. Madron in Dexter. He preceded her in death in 1970. She married Tom Young on Sept. 29, 1976, in Artesia. He preceded her in death in 1993. Her final marriage was on March 8, 1997, to Charlie (Jack) Hanna in Artesia.
She moved to Artesia from Arkansas in 1929. She was a housewife and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband Charlie Alma (Jack) Hanna, of the home; daughters Barbara June Ripley of Artesia and Betty Grace Ripley of Saraland, Ala.; sons Billy Eugene Madron of Romance, Ark., Bobby Joe Madron of Artesia, Lonnie Roy Madron of Irving, Texas, Harold Lee Madron of Alexander, Ark., and Gerald Dee Madron of Artesia; brother Clarence Lee Forister of Hope; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.
Holder, Gracie - October 24 , 2000

Services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at West Main Baptist Church for Gracie Holder of 6521 Seven Rivers.
Holder, 91, died Oct. 23 at her home.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Leo Pennington and I. J. Bizzell, with burial at Woodbine Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Perry Holder, Wayne Holder, Charles Holder, Kent Bush, Jim Bush and Harmon Bush.
All senior members of West Main Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Terpening and Son Mortuary.
Born Dec. 3, 1908, in Bowie, Texas, to Sam and Lula Mulleaux Williams, she married J. P. Holder in 1961 in Lubbock, Texas.
Holder came to Artesia in 1962 from Idalou, Texas, and was a housewife.
She was also a member of West Main Baptist Church where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include sons Harmon Bush and his wife, Marilyn, Wayne Holder and his wife, Deanna, and Charles Holder and his wife, Nancy, all of Artesia, and Perry Holder and his wife, Wanda, of Roswell; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Holder was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a sister and one grandson.
Holguin, Mary V. - November 16, 2000

Mass of Christian burial for Mary V. Holguin, 57, of Hobbs, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Artesia.
Burial will follow at Woodbine Cemetery in Artesia, with Father Vince Peterson officiating.
A rosary was recited Wednesday at Bethany Funeral Home Chapel in Hobbs, with Father Jose Reyes, OPM, Conv. and another rosary is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Grace, with Deacon Pablo Merjil as celebrant.
Holguin was born Feb. 17, 1943 in Candelaria, Texas, to Manuel and Refugia Villanueva. She was a resident of Hobbs for the past 30 years and worked as a caretaker in people's homes. She passed away Nov. 14 in Lubbock, Texas.
Survivors include: one son, Jesse Armendariz and wife Suzie of Artesia; one daughter, Roseann Arcidez and husband Rudy of Midland, Texas; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tony Villanueva of Phoenix, Ariz., and Manuel Villanueva of Pecos, Texas; mother Refugia Villanueva of Artesia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1990 and one brother, Juan Villanueva in 1970.
Huerta, Manuel S. Jr. - October 19, 2000

Funeral services for Manuel S. "Jr. Bo" Huerta Jr., 49, of 507 Cleveland Ave., who died Oct. 17 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Fr. Alcuin Hunter will officiate. Burial will be at Woodbine Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Steven Huerta, Sebastian Huerta, Sammy Madrid, Ben Huerta, Johnny Huerta and Chilo Huerta. Honorary pallbearers are Louis Garcia, Danny Ybarra, Richard Cardenas and all other friends.
Visitation at Terpening & Son Mortuary will begin at 10 a.m. Friday. Vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace.
Huerta was born May 10, 1951, in Artesia to Manuel S. Huerta Sr. and Lola (Segoviano) Huerta. He married Socorro Herrera on Jan. 28, 1970 in Artesia.
Huerta was a lifelong resident of Artesia and was a bus driver for FLETC. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church.
Survivors include: wife Socorro Huerta of the home; mother Lola Huerta of Artesia; three sons, Manuel Huerta II and wife Johnnie of Artesia, Steven Huerta and wife Carolie of Artesia and Sebastian Huerta and wife Venus, of Artesia; one daughter, Michelle Madrid and husband Sammy of Artesia; three brothers, Ben Huerta of Artesia, Johnny Huerta of Albuquerque and Chilo Huerta of Artesia.; six sisters, Sally Carrasco of Carlsbad, Angie Martinez of Artesia, Betty Hernandez of Artesia, Helen Huerta of Artesia, Corina Gurrola of Artesia and Gracie Huerta of Artesia; seven grandchildren, Cynthia, Skye, Starr, Steven, Rheana and Federico "Lico" Huerta and Ashley Madrid, all of Artesia.
He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel S. Huerta Sr. in 1997 and by a brother in 1991.
Kaspar, Virginia Carol - October 11, 2000

Graveside services are scheduled at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 20, for Virginia Carol Kaspar, of Hobbs.
Kaspar, 54, died Oct. 16 in Hobbs.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Jerry Chapman and Bob Gonzales of Roswell Christian Center, with burial in Woodbine Cemetery.
Pallbearers are William Phillip Chapman II, Jason Lucero, Daniel Chapman, Hiram Hudson Jr., Gerald Sentell and Travis Cochran.
Damian Hudson, Jeremy Chapman, Mary Chapman-Cochran, Susan Chapman, Sarah Chapman, Tabitha McKaskey, Charity Calvert, Michele Hartford, Geneva Clements, Sherry Chapman and all great nieces and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Kaspar was born April 8, 1946, in Artesia to Bolivar and Virginia Chapman.
She was a country-gospel singer and songwriter, having written and performed "A Tribute to Tex Ritter," "Marines on Sunday," "You Call Me Angel," "That's the Way Love Goes" and many other gospel songs.
She was known to close friends and family as an outgoing lover of people, who loved Jesus Christ.
Survivors include her mother, Virginia Hudson of Roswell; children Terra Arrellano of Albuquerque, Angela Weber of Little Rock, Arkansas, Shaine Allan Kaspar and Aaron Kaspar, both of Conway, Arkansas; brothers Larry J. Chapman, Rev. Jerry E. Chapman and Hiram Laray Hudson, all of Roswell, and William Phillip Chapman of Artesia; sister Beverly F. Moore of Roswell; and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father Bolivar Chapman and her step-father Hiram H. Hudson.
Needham, John Wesley - November 12, 2000

Graveside services for John Wesley Needham, 70, who died Saturday are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Woodbine Cemetery in Artesia.
Pastor Rick Sullivan of First Baptist Church will officiate.
Needham was born Dec. 28, 1929 in Artesia to Wesley L. and Flora Wilson Needham. They both preceded him in death as did a sister, Bonnie Parrish and brother-in -law, John Cockrum. Survivors include one son, John Wesley Needham Jr. and wife Tina; one daughter, Jana Bartlett and husband Tony and two grandchildren, Kyle Smith and Kieran Bartlett, all of Roswell; two sisters, Nora Cockrum of Artesia and Carolyn Plummer and husband Bill of Texas; one brother-in-law, Harold Parrish of Artesia; and several nieces and nephews.
Needham will be remembered by numerous close friends including Keith Judd, John August Nelson, Jackie Spence, Floyd and Joan Howard and Bob Collins, a special uncle, Bob Needham and all the coffee drinkers at Big T in Artesia.
Although spending most of his life in Artesia, he had lived in Roswell for 17 years. He served in the Army. After returning from service he joined in partnership with his dad to form Needham and Son Pump Company. He remained in the water well business until retirement with Smith Machinery.

Olivas, Ygnacio L. - October 8  2000

Funeral services for Ygnacio L. (Nacho) Olivas will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Grace Church.
Olivas, 89, of 1614 Oak St. in Artesia, passed away at Artesia General Hospital on Oct. 6.
Father Vincent Peterson will officiate at services. Pallbearers will be nephews and sons. Burial will be at Woodbine Cemetery.
Visitation at Terpening & Son Mortuary will begin at 10 a.m. Monday. A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Church.
Olivas was born July 31, 1911, in Chihuahua, Mexico and married Celia Munoz in May of 1974 in Artesia.
He moved to Artesia as a teen-ager and had been retired from the City of Artesia water department since 1971. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church and was a volunteer custodian at the Artesia Center and was a former member of the Moose Lodge.
Survivors include: wife Celia Olivas of the home; eight sons, Ygnacio (Junior) Olivas of San Diego, Calif., Ygnacio Olivas III of Lovington, Arturo Olivas of Roswell, Manuel Olivas of Albuquerque, Paul Olivas of Artesia, Jimmy Hernandez of Artesia, Cruz Munoz of Artesia and Albert Munoz of Roswell; nine daughters, Maria Chandler of Austin, Texas, Janie Olivas Segura, of Artesia, Nellie Sanchez of Levelland, Texas and six daughters who live in Mexico; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Urias, Bernabe "Bill" - December 1 2000

Services are scheduled at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 4, at Spanish Assembly of God, for Bernabe "Bill" Urias of 2005 W. Bullock Ave.
Urias, 80, passed away Nov. 30.
Services will be conducted by Rev. Manuel Carrera, with burial at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will began at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at Terpening & Son Mortuary.
A prayer service is scheduled for 6 p.m., Sunday, at the Spanish Assembly of God Church.
Born Aug. 5, 1920, in Redford, Texas, to Eugene Urias and Manuella Catano Urias, he married Maria De La Luz on Aug. 5, 1948, in Redford, Texas.
Urias came to Artesia in 1963 from Texas and was a farm laborer.
He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was also a member of Spanish Assembly of God.
Survivors include sons Manuel Urias of Artesia, Mario Urias of Clovis and Rey Michael Urias-Strawbridge of Lubbock, Texas; daughter Maria Louisa Orosco of Lubbock, Texas; sister Celia U. Catano of Marfa, Texas; brother Livorio Catano, also of Marfa; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Urias was preceded in death by his wife, Maria, in January 1988.
