Mrs. Alexander A. McSween,
widow of a Lincoln County merchant, employed Huston J. Chapman, a Las
Vegas attorney to find the men who murdered her husband, July 19,1878.
Chapman was killed in Lincoln on the evening of February 18, 1879.
Meanwhile, on February 15, 1879 Governor Lew Wallace authorized the
organization of a company of mounted riflemen in the county of Lincoln to
assist the civil authorities in repressing violence and restoring
order in that county. The Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New
Mexico at the 24th session appropriated funds to be paid as full
payment to the persons below. This Act was approved February 5, 1880 and
the Territorial Auditor was authorized to deliver warrants on the
Territorial Treasury to the Officers and Men as well as those who incurred
debt due to subsistence of the men and animals. $2,206.52 is hereby
appropriated for payment to the following persons:
