WELCOME TO

LINCOLN
COUNTY Lafferty--John Annis Lafferty, son of J.B. and
Sallie Lafferty was born in Carrollton, Ark, Sep 11, 1838; moved to Parker
County, Texas in 1858, when that country was infested with Indians. When
the call came to defend his home and country he volunteered enlisting in
the Second Texas Cavalry, with Colonel Pyron in Command. He was in the
battle of Galveston, and was twice wounded in the battle of Lipadole, La.
While at home recovering from these wounds he was converted and joined the
M.E. Church, South. He was married to Miss Mary H. Lipsey October 22 1863
in Wise County, Texas. Later he went to New Mexico from which place he
went to be with god. April 26 1911. His life was an expression of God's
forgiving love, and those who came in touch with him were made to feel
that he had been with Christ. He was ordained deacon in the M.E. Church
South and was ever active in the work of the Church on the frontier. He
leave an aged wife and five children, four having preceded him to the
better world. His body is resting on his own place in the snow capped
mountains of New Mexico. Funeral services were conducted by J.F. Bandy, a
volunteer in the army of General Sam Houston and a member of the Christian
Church. Only his son and daughter were with him when he died. We mourn not
as those who have no hope. May the children strive to meet where death is
unknown. His daughter. Mrs J.A. Stegall, Panhandle, Texas. Return to the Return to the
TOMBSTONES
John Annis Lafferty was buried on his
ranch. The Ranch ended up as part of Lincoln County
National Forest. The directions sent to Mary
Lafferty Wilson by Francis Stegall, wife of Frank Lewis Stegall born
1899. Frank Stegall was a nephew of Rev. J. A. Lafferty.
The directions are from 50 years ago when they went to look for the
grave.
"We went to Capitan, NM and north about 8 miles,
turned east on the north side of Old Capitan Mountain and drove 10
miles or more until we came to a road marked Cable switch and I
believe it was 2 or 3 miles into the mountains. We never were
able to get to as a rock blocked the road. Later some friends who
were hiking through the area found
it."
