Leading Educator Killed.
Prof. U. Francis Duff was killed in a pistol duel at his home in Deming, New Mexico, with Prof. Dickey. Bad blood had existed between the two men for some time and a fight seemed inevitable. Duff was shot dead and Dickey seriously but not fatally wounded. The victim was a brother of Hon. John Duff, editor of the Newcomerstown Index.
Prof. Duff was superintendent of the Luna County schools and one of the most prominent educators in New Mexico. He was a student of archaeology, who had archived national reputation by his writing.

Murderers Are Respited
Deming, New Mexico December 13- Martin Amador and Magdaleno Saballazo condemned murderers were not hanged today Governor Curry having granted each a respite of thirty days. Sheriff Don Johnson had everything in readiness for a double execution when word was received from Santa Fe stating the hanging would be postponed.

Mrs. H.A. Gallegly, of Calgary, Alberta, stopped in Lincoln yesterday for a visit with her cousin, Jack Matthews, whole on her way to her new home at Deming, New Mexico.

Lilla Adair, of Beeville, Texas, Came to Deming last spring in search of health and remained here until October, when she left with her sister, Lessie, for Tucson, Ariz. They remained there about two weeks and left for their old home at Hondo, Texas : where she died of lung trouble December 2, 1911 Miss Adair a girl  of sweet disposition. One had but to know her to love her, She bore her suffering humbly and patiently and no doubt  she had passed on to that "glorious beyond" where suffering is no more. She leaves a host of friends in Deming who sympathize with the loved one in the loss so dear. (Submitted by Janice Rice)

Deputy Sheriff Carl Gordon, of Carlsbad, N. M and Inspector W. C. Simpson on Tuesday arrested Will Roberts, who is charged with horse stealing. Roberts was arrested at Holstein's livery barn. It seems that on December 14 Roberts and another man, Calvin Payne, stole three horses, two saddles and a Winchester rifle from a ranch house near Carlsbad. Deputy Sheriff Gordon arrested Payne at; Rodeo, N. M. All the stolen property was recovered, and both men were taken back to Carlsbad to stand trial.

Monday, January 6, at the Methodist parsonage, John B. Bryan; of Las Cruces and Miss Edith McLaughlin, were married by Rev. H. M. Bruce. The happy couple left for Las Cruces, where they will make their home. (Submitted by Janice Rice)

Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Ryan and two children of Deming, New Mexico, arrived in Humeston Thursday for a month's visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Ryan. Mr. Ryan has a position with the Southern Pacific.

Mrs. Charles Starr and little daughter Frances left last Thursday evening for Deming, New Mexico, where they will join Mr. Starr, and make their home their permanently. Mrs. Starr is well known in Reno, where he has taken a leading part in social and church circles and will be missed by her many friends.
