Leading Educator Killed.
Prof. U. Francis Duff was killed in a pistol duel at his home
in Deming, New Mexico, with Prof. Dickey. Bad blood had existed between the two
men for some time and a fight seemed inevitable. Duff was shot dead and Dickey
seriously but not fatally wounded. The victim was a brother of Hon. John Duff,
editor of the Newcomerstown Index.
Prof. Duff was superintendent of the Luna County
schools and one of the most prominent educators in New Mexico. He was a student
of archaeology, who had archived national reputation by his writing.

Murderers Are Respited
Deming, New Mexico December 13- Martin Amador and Magdaleno
Saballazo condemned murderers were not hanged today Governor Curry having
granted each a respite of thirty days. Sheriff Don Johnson had everything in
readiness for a double execution when word was received from Santa Fe stating
the hanging would be postponed.

Mrs. Charles Starr and little daughter Frances left last Thursday evening for Deming, New Mexico, where they will join Mr. Starr, and make their home their permanently. Mrs. Starr is well known in Reno, where he has taken a leading part in social and church circles and will be missed by her many friends.
