JONATHAN PITNEY, M. D.
BY S. B. KIRKBRIDE, M. D.
JONATHAN PITNEY, M. D., of Absecom, Atlantic county, New Jersey, died August 7th, 1869, aged nearly seventy-two
years. Doctor Pitney was born in Mendham, Morris county, New Jersey, October 29th, A. D., 1797, and came to Absecom,
to practice medicine, over forty years ago. He continued in active practice until a few years preceding his death,
which was caused
by consumption, brought on by the exposure and labors of his practice-his rides in the early days of his settling
in Absecom, frequently extending to a distance of forty miles, and through a then very wild and thinly settled
country. Doctor Pitney was a courteous, gentlemanly man, of fine hospitality, an excellent physician, and much
beloved by his patients and friends; of enemies few men had less. He was one of the members of the Convention held
in Trenton to revise the Constitution of New Jersey, and made many wise and valuable suggestions relative to the
same. He was a deep and able thinker. It was mainly through his persistent efforts that the Camden and
Atlantic Railroad was constructed, and which is now aiding much in developing the resources of this county.
