As Westfield's War Mayor, Henry W. Evans proved an able leader, an untiring worker and a
fortress of patriotic strength. He was appointed a member of the Draft Board of this District
by Governor Edge, meeting daily at Summit, N.J., over a period of months. He organized and
had specially trained a Police Reserve of 60 citizens who patrolled the town all of each night
during the last nine months of the war. Westfield's Community Market as created by him made
it possible for our citizens to get food at the lowest possible cost during the period of food
shortage. He was among the first to rush to South Amboy in the midst of the Morgan Disaster
and offer all of Westfield's facilities to the chief in command there. He led aggressively in the
Red Cross and Liberty Loan Campaigns. His expressions of sympathy in behalf of our citizens
at the individual Memorial services for our Supreme Honor Men will never be forgotten by
those present. He greeted personally each man and woman of our town as they left for the
front. Mayor Evans served his country well.

THE BOYS OF '17 -- The title of this program is a reproduction of the title of a 28-page paper
sent to the service men and women of Westfield by Leigh M. Pearsall. It found them in the
trenches, hospitals and camps of England, France, Italy and America. It was filled with inspiring
cartoons, war facts, photos of the service men, etc. It regularly gave the most important news
of Westfield. Scores and scores of letters received from the front by Mr. Pearsall were printed
in the little war magazine, thus enabling the men in service to frequently hear from each
other, not otherwise possible.
